It's a lot like Tahoe but also different. It's peaceful and beautiful but on a much smaller scale than Tahoe. There is a public Beach and lots of scenery to enjoy.

Donner Lake is a very beautiful lake. It is located in a very touristic area, and popular with boaters, swimmers, fisherman, skiers, and hikers. The noisy highway above it takes away from the beauty. We were lucky to be there on a week day, as...More

We picked up some tacos to go and met friends at the lakeshore near sunset. It was beautiful watching the light on the water surrounded by woods and mountains. There are picnic tables and bathrooms which were clean and convenient. Warning signs post by the...More

Donner Lake is beautiful up close or viewed from the summit. We hiked the train tunnels and had beautiful views from afar then drove down to the lake itself. A very dog friendly area as well!

This is a very nice lake. There is a road right along the one side with some cool old small hotels. The other side is framed by mountains. You can see some of the old train works up on the mountains. With a blue sky...More

About 2.5 hours around the entire lake with 2 dogs. Realized approx 65% of Donner Lake is not public accessible. I started on the east end and access is Donner Memorial State Park. Love this State Park and have no problem paying the $10.00 day...More

We visited both Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake and had a great time at both places, however we actually prefer Donner Lake because it has more variety. We were not able to rent Kayaks at Tahoe because it was too windy, however even though it...More

We rode our bicycles around this lake in late June and it was beautiful. We discovered Donner Memorial State Park which has 150 camping sites and a huge long beach area with picnic tables and trees for shade. Around the other side of the lake...More

Donner Lake is beautiful but unfortunately no one seems to have had the forethought to protect the lakeshore from privatization, so that the lake is mainly inaccessible to the public. Most of the lakeshore is private property and docks. So there is no where to...More

In my most humble opinion, Donner Lake is one of the most overlooked jewels in the Reno/Tahoe area. Everyone wants to go to "The Lake (Tahoe)", or to Reno. Meanwhile, they drive by on I 80, one of the most beautiful lakes in the region....More
