Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary protects 1,286 square miles of extremely productive marine area, just north of the Farallon Islands. The sanctuary is located offshore, with its southern-most boundary located 42 miles north of San Francisco. The area is a lush feeding ground for many marine mammals and seabirds. Endangered humpback whales along with Dall's porpoises, albatross, shearwaters, and countless other marine species flourish in this extraordinarily rich marine environment. Recreational enthusiasts can enjoy seasonal fishing, wildlife viewing and boating in the sanctuary waters. Visitors should be aware that due to the remote nature of Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary and often rough sea conditions, visiting the sanctuary itself requires access to ocean-ready boats and should involve careful planning.
