After breakfast at Denny’s, I went to the Munjoy Hill neighborhood to visit Fort Allen Park and to trek along the Eastern Promenade.

The parking situation at Fort Allen Park was much better than I thought it would be. There were plenty of vacant parking spaces. I got one right up front and almost head-on to of Fort Gorges out in the Fore River.

The park was originally named for Ethan Allen. The park dates from the American Revolutionary War.

The park featured a number of park benches overlooking Fort Gorges and the Fore River.

At the southern end of the park was a 6” gun from the USS Maine, the ship that sank after an onboard explosion in Havana, Cuba that started the Spanish-American War in 1898.

When I walked up to the northern end of the park, I visited the memorial to the USS Portland (CA-33) which includes the mainmast and bridge shield along with info boards. The USS Portland participated in all major battles, beginning with the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942 through the Battle of Midway, and to the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. During her service, she received 16 battle stars. She was one of the most-decorated ships ever to serve in the U.S. fleet. I thought that it was well worth a 15-minute stop to take in the displays and to read the text on the boards.

The park also has a memorial bench and two 4.5-inch rifles dating from the American Civil War era as well as a historic bandstand built in the 1890’s.

Fort Allen Park is a very scenic city park full of history.

For its scenic views and historic artifacts, I rate my experience at Fort Allen Park at 5.0 and highly recommend a visit.

A nice park with nice views of the ocean. There isn't all that much parking here. It's a good short stop activity.

Fort Allen Park is a nice stretch of a park along the water along the old narrow gauge rail lines. The path is well maintained and great for running, walking, or cycling. As you round the promontory, you get some really nice views of Casco Bay. The beach is also nice, especially for dogs. The hill up to Marjan from here is very nice, and a great place to sit with a picnic with great views.

The park is at the eastern end of Portland, overlooking Casco Bay. There are parking spots and several cars were there "just to sit and watch the water". Also there are several benches and many people were sitting out enjoying the view and the fresh air. There is a beautiful gazebo where you can sit in the shade also. You can climb the stairs from the eastern promenade to get here (steep and uneven steps) or walk from the street.

This old, grassy park, under renovation when we saw it, is on Portland’s Eastern Promenade. Fort Allen Park is at the site of the remains of a War of 1812-era fort (built in 1814) used to protect the city from British warships. On our visit, only tiers of earthworks were faintly visible. Steep trails connected the park with the Eastern Promenade Trail. Park benches lined the prom. More benches faced Casco Bay as if it were a theater stage. Fir trees were gone. Parking spaces were gone. Two old cannons also were gone. The ship mast and bandstand remained. New sidewalks were prominent, done in a shade of white that was impractical to keep clean. We most enjoyed the expansive view. We least liked the loss of the iconic fir trees.

My wife be I visited this park today, and we were blown away with the breathtaking views. It can be a bit of a climb if you climb up from Commerical Street, but it is well worth it. There is a nice shady gazebo and a lot of trees near the top. It is a perfect picnic spot, and we saw a lot of people setting up for picnics while we were there. This should be a part of any Portland visit.

This 10-acre park by Casco Bay has great views & many historic items to see. There is a cannon from the USS Maine & a restored masthead from the USS Portland. There is also a great view of Ft Allen which is on an island in the bay. I'm glad I went here.

The park is quiet (and colder) this time of year -- less crowds, a few joggers. The views are still great, though!

Absolutely beautiful! We road our bikes on the bike trail from which we could see the beautiful views of the bay. Plenty of resting spots which are good to take a break, view the boats and people watching
