We were watching this from the Lincoln monument. Not sure it's possible to enter the monument. I was told they run out of money while building it so it has 2 different colors.

The best view of the Washington monument was at the Lincoln memorial end of the reflection pool, because (as the name suggests), you can see the Washington monument reflected in the water. It is a monolithic structure that sits patriotically in the American capital and is well worth taking the time to see.

You can't be a tourist in D.C. without visiting the Washington Monument. We got there around 9am and the ticket line wasn't too long, although I've heard it's packed most of the day. Go early and avoid the wait! It's definitely worth it to go inside and up to the top. You'll get great views of the White House, Capitol... More

Another must see on the walk of the national mall. We had fun taking pictures "pinching" the monument in our fingers (haha) we call it the Washington DC toothpick!

Booked tickets to go up inside the monument and while I appreciate it can be closed at short notice, we weren't notified of the closure until the Immigration Officer at the airport told us. They had our e-mail address so could have let us know.

This is a huge iconic monument which you can see from all over DC and is worth visiting close up to really appreciate its size. Unfortunately the lift inside is broken and may not be replaced until 2019 so it's not currently possible to go inside and visit the top.

One of the greatest landmarks in the world and definitely within Washington DC. The internal viewing is closed indefinitely, but its the shear size of it from the outside is why you visit.

There are so many monuments in such a small area but this is a must - you can see it from a distance from so many parts of Washington but you don't appreciate how large it is until you walk up close to it.

Alert to tourists who may not have heard: the Washington Monument elevator will be closed for repairs until the year 2019. In 2011, there was an earthquake that cracked the stones and led to three years of repairs to the stones (but not the elevator). The monument was reopened in 2014 but the elevator hasn't been right since. A string... More
