- Jeffrey HHonolulu, Hawaii69 contributionsSurprisingly awesome experienceThe National Portrait Gallery is intertwined with the Smithsonian American Art Museum - same building. What a surprisingly excellent three hours. In fact, when I walked through several famous museums in NYC, I took only a few photos of special items. At this museum, I took 25 photos - so many wonderful drop-jaw objects. I also was introduced to Alma Thomas' excellent paintings. Awesome. It's also free.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 10 October 2023
- csserious2Chantilly, Virginia823 contributionsGreat place to visitWe have been to the Portrait Gallery to attend a wedding event on a Saturday evening along with 600 guests. Yes, they do have a huge majestic hall to host large gatherings. The ceiling of the hall was three stories high and the inside was beautiful. While we were waiting to enter the venue, we took sneak peak of some of the portraits in the hallway. Parking could be a challenge although garages are located nearby. People usually take metro or bus to cone to visit the museums and art galleries.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023
- The_Wanderer1992Columbia, Maryland2,539 contributionsMuseum VisitMy husband and I went to the combined National Portrait Gallery/American Art Museum. It's located in a beautiful building. Numerous artwork and portraits are available. The most popular section seems to be the American Presidents section with portraits of all the U.S. presidents from George Washington to Donald Trump. We did not see one with the current president. We tried to do the whole museum in our time allotment, though I'm not sure we covered it all.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 November 2023
- sfuhere823 contributionsEnjoyablePopped in on a whim as I was close by. I enjoyed myself. I made a beeline for the “America’s Presidents” exhibition, which is probably the most popular part of the gallery. It was busy but not so packed that it made it unpleasant. The area with the more historical portraits was quieter anyway. My only negative observation is that some of the lockers on the ground floor appeared to be out of order. It’s great that they are provided free of charge (certainly in Britain you’d have to pay) but I must have tried half a dozen before I found one that worked.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 November 2023
- Robert D4,403 contributionsExcellent museumThe Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) and the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) are both housed in the old Patent Office building. The NPG features portraits of people who had an impact on the U.S. Every year, there is a gallery titled "One Life" that is devoted to various portraits of a famous American. This year the subject is Frederick Douglass. The NPG had an exhibit titled "1898: U.S. Imperial Visions and Revisions" about the Spanish-American War and the acquisition of an empire by the U.S. Another exhibit featured portraits of all the Presidents.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 4 January 2024
- lalocadr19Falls Church, Virginia6,748 contributionsBeautiful portraitsOne of my favorite museum so many portraits to see, from presidents, painter, singer, athlete. This place has so much to see. Anyone that interested in art this place is definitely a delight. The best part is free of charge and open late during the week. Parking can be hassle but definitely worth it to see.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 January 2024

Holy smokes, I could have stared at Obama’s portrait forever. Simply electric.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 February 2024

- withubbyIrmo, South Carolina49 contributionsBeautiful collectionsExcellent museum with varying exhibits. It shares space with the American Art Museum. The Amish Quilt Exhibit is fantastic. We did participate in the free docent-lead tour and the lady we had was just beyond excellent. I wish I remembered her name but she is a retired librarian and extremely knowledgeable. There is so much to see here!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 April 2024
- Alexandra C35 contributionsOne of the best Smithsonian museums in the area for older American history. You will get a history lesson.Truly a hidden gem amongst the “bigger” museums in the area. Going here was a spur of the moment decision fueled by Reddit reviews and it lived up to the hype that I read about. It’s much more than looking at pictures. Each painting/picture has a detailed description of what it is and the history behind it. The exhibits are top notch and truly a history lesson. There is much more “older American history” on display in this museum than in the “American History Museum.” Give yourself two hours to go through this if you want to read everything.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 May 2024

The presidential portrait gallery will take you through American history. It is truly amazing to see the different styles of painting to go along with the different styles of Presidents. The good and the bad alike tell our collective story

Try to time your entry early in the day because you will need the time to enjoy the 3 floors worth of art. There are different types of subjects but for the most part the subjects were of people. We really enjoyed seeing the portraits of the presidents. Glad we went.

This is a wonderful museum. The art work is nicely spaced and even though it was a holiday week, it never felt crowded. The building is remarkable piece of architecture.

Every trip my wife and I make to DC we have to include the National Portrait Gallery. The permanent collection of all the US Presidents is only a small part of this Museum. It is connect to the National Art Museum so there are traveling shows along with permanent exhibits. On one visit they had a daguerreotype of President Lincoln that was taken at Matthew Brady's studio in NYC when the President presented his famous Emancipation Proclamation speech. They have a nice cafe and you can enjoy a bite in the huge naturally lit indoor spectacular atrium. They also have live music performances in the atrium on certain days.

This National Gallery is amazing to see. It's truly a beautiful building to see and there are many floors and exhibits to view. There is live music on occasion as well as a wonderful courtyard to sit and relax while walking around the DC area. The hall with the Presidents Formal Portraits was my favorite.

I had come to the National Portrait Gallery to see the "Watergate Exhibition" and I was impressed on how they mounted and explained what happened. It was an eye opener considering I had lived through it as a kid and never really knew what the situation was and how it affected the whole country.
What was more impressive is how the press made a mockery of the whole situation and the players who were eventually found guilty were portrayed by the press. I liked the Time Magazine cover where everyone was pointing at everyone else. That I remembered as a kid. The exhibit was short and sweet and right to the point of what happened.
After that I went to visit the Hall of Presidents and saw all the portraits. It is funny but I think most of the people who visit this gallery don't know who most of them were or what they contributed.
It is worth the time to especially see these.

This is one of my "go to"s when visiting DC as they typically have interesting special exhibitions (in addition to the regular museum). Only downside to my recent visit was lack of clarity on where the special exhibits were - staff were sparse and the one I found was uninformed. I ended up just wandering and stumbling upon what I wanted to see. I believe they have since eliminated the need for timed tickets.

The National Portrait Gallery takes up about half of each of the three floor of the old Patent Office Building. (The other half is the Smithsonian American Art Museum.) One of my favorite exhibits features the entries in the Outwin Bouvecher Portrait Competition. In addition, you can see historic figures as well as contemporary Americans. Unlike the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall, this museum is open until 7 p.m. every day.

if you like portraits and representational art, or think you might, you must visit the NPG -- outstanding captions, full of insight into the subject and the artist, brings US history alive. And the building itself is stunning, newly opened when Lincoln held his second inaugural ball here (was the new patent office). Off the mall by a few blocks but surrounded by restaurants and has a nearby metro stop

Fine museum. Well worth taking a few hours to visit - the special exhibitions can be riveting. One note of caution: the cafe is astonishingly expensive and the food poor quality for the cost. Museum of Art cafeteria is a fantastic alternative - highly recommended.

Take a look at the website and determine what you absolutely don’t want to miss. If you arrive a little before the museum opens, yo should not have an isssue with crowds. The presidential portrait exhibit is excellent. Be sure to visit the room where Michelle Obama’s portrait is located!

Are there still long wait lines to enter?
Written 22 June 2018
No wait to enter. I’ve seen a 10-15 minute wait to stand in front of President Obama’s portrait (Weekend), Mrs Obama’s portrait was just crowded.

Hi there :
You should take a look at the National Portrait Gallery's own website.
You'll find quite a lot of helpful information under the VISIT - ACCESSIBILITY section, including the following : "For your comfort, wheelchairs can be borrowed by asking the security officer stationed at each museum entrance".
[It might also be a good idea to "double-check" wheelchair availability with the museum in advance of your intended visit, using the Phone and/or Email details on their website]
Enjoy your visit to this wonderful museum!

How far is the National Portrait Gallery from the Convention Center? Is it walkable from hotel/center to the gallery? (Coming to DC in a few weeks for a conference and would love to slip away to visit the Gallery.) Thank you!
Written 4 April 2018
As mentioned above the fastest way to get there would be to take the Metro, otherwise it's a fairly short (10 minutes or so) walk.
Written 6 April 2018
No, you can simply walk in. If you visit during the week it is fairly quiet and even on weekends, it doesn't feel that busy (it is so vast that you don't notice the crowds!). There is no charge, unless there is a specific exhibition. I recommend half a day at least to see it all or simply go back the following day for a couple of hours. Do not miss the presidential portrait gallery and the contemporary American artists on the top floor. Enjoy!
