About
Please note that tour reservations are required for entry.
The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for more than two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but also to the American people and their government.

- Brei H17 contributionsDefinitely Worth the Experience!WOW! If you haven't had a chance to tour this building, you are missing out! There's so much history inside that you don't get to see unless you do a tour. We booked through our congressman, but you are able to go the same day and will most likely get tickets, as they are available. You are given headphones to wear so you can hear your specific tour guide and you're not getting confused by all the other groups talking as well, especially in the rotunda area, where it can get very loud.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 September 2023
- Oliver ALeeds, United Kingdom322 contributionsNice, quick and snappy tour of the CapitolWe reserved a tour online. To get to the tour on the day, you go through the visitor center. Our tour was quite busy, maybe around 60 people. You first head into a theatre for a quick video before heading through the various rooms. You're given a set of headphones so that you can hear the tour guide. Our tour guide was great. It's a tour catered for the masses so it's quite quick and snappy. If you're looking for something more private this isn't the one for you.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 19 September 2023
- waughwaugh7875 contributionsFree public tour did not disappointed.Done the public tour that was free and it did not disappoint. Our guide Dan was really nice, knowledgable and engaging. The tour itself is great to see the history of the US and with the building itself just stunning to walk around. Would recommend for sure.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 September 2023
- GSM_ukCrawley, United Kingdom285 contributionsMesmerising LandmarkThis remarkable landmark captures my attention that I visited twice. Most visitors would have taken pics in front which you can see the barricade was placed for safety and security purposes which in a way taken the true beauty of liberty and freedom of speech. However , visitors can also go at the back to catch the beautiful image of the capitol. On a hot weather thankfully there is a water fountain that you can drink and I love the idea of not putting bins in the site to discourage littering.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 September 2023
- SteveK28762Worcestershire, United Kingdom88 contributionsAwesome - take the tour!Stunning building that is iconic Washington DC, and is much more impressive in the flesh... just beautiful. We took the tour, having booked in advance, which takes you around all of the key areas of the building with very knowledgeable guides who are brilliant, and open to answering any questions that the group may have. The various areas are incredible... especially when accompanied by the guide's additional information. We also visited the Senate and the House Of Representatives which are both very impressive - interesting that it seemed easier for us, from the UK, to do this than it is for US citizens - we simply visit the desk in the Capitol to pick up passes, whereas US citizens have to visit the office of their representative to get them, which could mean a trip to a completely different building. Overall, fantastic. Would highly recommend.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 October 2023
- Bathsheba H8 contributionsFamily Capitol TourOur visit was excellent. The video and tour were informative and well presented. All Capitol staff were friendly and helpful. We watched the Senate from the gallery, which was incredible. Notes: 1. You can ask your senator or congressperson for gallery passes. 2. As a visitor to the Capitol, you can access the tunnel to the Library of Congress, which is cool. 3. You must go to the Capitol Visitor Center to check in (unlike for the White House tour).Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 October 2023
- Ginge59_12London, United Kingdom673 contributionsPlan ahead.Plan and prepare ahead! If booking from the UK you need to be aware of the time zone when booking- and the need to make an account with a password etc. Not difficult but it is best to do this in advance. The same account is used for the Washington Monument. Also remember to allow time to pass through security etc. No food or drinks- but there is a lovely cafeteria. We had a 10am tour, arrived early and was asked if we wanted to join the 9.20 tour. If you are able go early as it gets busy. Once inside it is a joy to the eyes and brings history to life. Make sure you take time to absorb the exhibits after the tour.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 October 2023
- Whitney DRacine, Wisconsin100 contributionsReally cool but tour guidess give your group a break!Another must see in DC, make sure to make your reservations early as typically there will be at least 2 school groups there. They first show you a movie then take you in small groups to explore the different halls. I enjoyed the tour and our tour guide was very helpful. HOWEVER, they tell you to take the time to take pictures but that you are not supposed to leave the group which is ridicous because your group does not move around the hall so how the hell are you supposed to do that? Don't be afriad to walk away from your group in order to take the pictures that you want just be sure to make your way back. I would recommend the tour guides give everyone a few minutes to explore the area once there speal is over with so you can take the pictures you want and don't feel like you will get in trouble!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- Rick HollimanDenton, Texas28 contributionsGreat Capitol experienceWe pre-booked our Capitol tour through the Capitol website for a certain time allowing time for the metro & walking from the metro stop. We arrived early, got in a pretty long but fast-moving line, and asked the ticket clerk if it would be possible to get an earlier time & we were surprised that he said, "how about right now". So, we went on the next tour and our tour guide did a fantastic job. She was very knowledgeable. Although the tour is limited to just a couple of areas (understandably) it was still awesome to see & learn about our U.S Capitol building.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 November 2023
- sfuhere808 contributionsUnmissableYou have to do this if you’re in DC. I was worried we wouldn’t get in as there were no spaces on the website to reserve a tour. I needn’t have worried. We arrived around 11am on a public holiday and were able to join a tour more or less straightaway. However that was in November - obviously in summer it could be different. It starts with a well-produced film explaining the basics of what Congress is, without being boring about it. Then you join the tour itself. The tour is not extensive and you only see the crypt, the rotunda and the statuary hall, but it’s free and fascinating nonetheless. Our guide was great, really engaging and able to answer any and all questions thrown at him. The headphones worked well and it was all really easy to follow. The cafeteria in the basement is less impressive, full of kids on school trips and if I were you I’d give it a swerve. On the whole though I would strongly recommend anyone to do this tour, American or not.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 November 2023

We did the guided tour and loved it! Our guide was so informative and I know we got so much more information than if we just walked around ourselves. The tour is fairly quick, but you can go back and take a longer look at things after its over. We also ate there and thought the food was really good, the staff was super friendly and the prices were very reasonable. We waited in a line for about 30 mins to get in, which isn't terrible, but we learned later that the Library of Congress is attached to the Capitol by a tunnel. So, once you enter either one, you can access the other without going through security again. When we left through the LOC, I noticed that there was no line to get in. My tip would be to maybe see if you can get in quicker through the LOC, then walk over to the Capitol, especially if you have a tour booked in advance and are in a time crunch or if the weather is bad (it rained on us).

Just back from my second DC trip. In addition to the general tour of the capitol, I highly recommend the additional tours offered. I've done the Senate murals tour (last spring), which shows the opulent and colorful murals that grace the Senate chamber halls, and the new Votes for Women tour (last week), which focuses on the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment.
Both tours were excellent. And they can be smaller and more personal, too. You can see what's being offered by checking the Visitor's Center calendar on its website. Tour tickets (free) are available at the info desk each morning. You can come by first thing and get a pass and then go do something else (I went to the Supreme Court for oral arguments last week and returned for my tour at 1:00). Or you can get a bite at the cafeteria (try the Senate bean soup!)

I’ve always been here in the summer and super crowded but there are no crowds in the winter. I was here with teens and they loved seeing all the hoopla with the impeachment. All they could see were cameras set up but it got them excited. Tour is informative enough to keep the teens engaged. It took an hour. By the time we left there were even less people in the lobby waiting for a tour. We made reservations but didn’t need them. We were there on a Friday at 8:30 for the 9 am tour. I mentioned the crowd situation during summer but she explained that spring break is the busiest time of the year for DC.

Per the website we arrived for a family tour that occurs a few times a month. Sadly they decided to cancel these tours as it was more off season but didn’t update the website. We had a devastated daughter that had spent months building the Capitol out of legos & wanted to see it in person. Gallery passes usually require going through your representative. There are long lines with timed tours & passes as well but we spent so long trying to go eith staff to figure out what was going on with the family tour that we then did not have the bandwidth with kids to wait in a long line for a timed option. Sadly missed seeing much but it’s still a spectacular building.

I have traveled all over the world and currently reside in Germany, so I have seen some amazing architecture and taken some incredible tours. Seeing the US Capital today on a tour versus looking at it from the outside was so much more than I expected. The building speaks for itself but for me it was the docent who made the tour so very impressive. Mr. D. Wall is a credit to the staff and is a true ambassador of what this building represents to our nation. He is very well informed and knowledgable to an impressive level. His breath of experience with regard to US History was clearly evident throughout the tour. Mr. Wall's ability to tie in many aspects of history demonstrated a clear understanding of events and how then have helped to shaped this nation. Finally, his personal presentation style sets him above many other tour guides I have encountered during my travels. Thank you very much Mr. Wall for a great visit, I also sincerely enjoyed our chat when the tour concluded.

Our guided tour by one of the official Capitol guides was wonderful! Our guide, Lindsay, knew the answers to everyone's questions, knew every statue, every painting and was very engaging. Our family was really impressed with the tour and loved the detailed explanations of the rotunda ceiling painting, the crypt (and how there's nobody buried there) and our guide's genuine interest in the Capitol building's history.
Even though it's free, I recommend reserving a specific tour time and date ahead of time, online. You can try to join a tour on the day you visit but there are no guarantees there will be openings.
We were encouraged to take photos on the tour, but know that the tour does not enter the House or Senate chambers. If you want to visit the Senate or House of Representatives, you need to acquire free passes from your Senator's or Congressional representative's office. Visiting those places is not part of the guided Capitol tour.

My guide was very knowledgeable and explained to symbolism and functionality of parts of the building. I was surprised to see that the interior is not as ornate as the LOC or White House. I do wish I could have seen Congress in action - so much going on in the country right now.

Our tour would be considered 'Walking tour of US Capitol Interior.'
We were very fortunate we got tickets the same day (Tuesday July 5) whereas normally, this tour sells out prior. Anyway, upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by a couple of members of the tour staff who led us downstairs to get our actual tickets (a sticker we wore during our time).
After the introduction movie in the theatre (about 15 minutes), we got into Laura's line for the actual tour. We certainly picked the correct tour guide as she was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the Capitol. We also knew Laura was an excellent tour guide because the other two groups (from the total number of other visitors in the theatre with us) were finished long before we were!

Tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and included more than just the history of the building. You can hear the narration with headphones in a very good condition. Takes around 45 minutes; you can take pictures and videos. Highly recommended.

My oh my, what an impressive building. The architecture is just beyond words. The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for more than two centuries
Renovations were ongoing on the left wing, but you still had a magnificent view of the building.

Are there restrictions on bags? Does the place have food? Does it enough restrooms? Does place have wheelchair access and help for seniors? Does place offer transportation to from Uber pick ups/train/metro?

How close can an Uber drop off near the capitol
Visitors center?
Written 9 October 2023
Depends; last time we were there, roads were shutdown and they had to drop us off 4 blocks away. The closest we’ve dropped off was right in front from the road but then you have to walk to the center down below and it’s probably 1-2 block total distance with the steps down to the center.

Hi, do we need any tickets/passes to enter the Cafeteria in Capitol ? I have visitor tour pass for 2pm, am I allowed to access cafeteria before that ?
Written 27 August 2023
Hi, I see from the official website that no liquid (include water) and food in the capitol, so if we have water and food, then will there be a place for us to put those items? and get them back after the tour? also how long does the line up for security check? if I book the tour at 2pm, when when should I arrive? 15 min or 30 min earlier? thanks
Written 28 July 2022
If you have a tour pre-arranged, you should arrive about 15/20 minutes early. After the security checks, you need to walk to the ticket booths which are situated downstairs at the end of the main hall to get your tickets and stickers to put on your jacket. As for taking drinks in, you are not allowed to take any in and there are receptacles outside to leave them in. No exceptions apparently. The entrance to the Capitol building is on the East side, which is the opposite side to that seen at the end of the Mall. If you want food, there is a restaurant at the far end of the hall. However, the food, although fine in quality, might be a little expensive. Hope this assists

Due to time constraints, are we allowed to visit the Visitor's Center without taking a tour? If so, will we still need to have photo ID's? (My adult son does not drive and does not have one)

Yes. You can just walk with proper ID but without a tour pass. The visitors' centre informative in itself.

The capital tour is free. It takes off several times per hour. The guides are excellent very knowledgeable. It is the only way to see the Capital. You must be escorted and have special passes otherwise. Highly recommended but does require significant walking & of course security checks
