The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for more than two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but also to the American people and their government.

The tour is free and takes you to three different areas of the Capital and has a short movie in the beginning. Our guide was fun and knowledgable. Unfortunately the rotunda is going through restoration so most of it was covered in scaffolding. There is a lot of beautiful architecture in the building. Tip: Besides the obvious no no's with... I found the U.S. Capitol to be so informative and beautiful and 'open'. We went just to take photos outside but ended up in the Visitor Centre and then on a free tour. Knowledgeable tour guide, he led us to the theatre where we watched a short movie and then continued on through the crypt and rotunda. I would like... More

Toured with a group of 7. Arranged by a local member of the house. A member of the Congressman's staff took us on a guided tour of both houses. There is a tremendous amount of historic art and statues. Contact your congressman or senator's office for a tour. Well worth the effort.

We went on a tour with a member of our congressman's staff and I will tell you that is the way to go. We spent far less time standing in line than others. The standard tour is the visitor's center, the crypt, statuary hall, old supreme court, the rotunda (which is currently covered with scaffolding and tarps (except for the... More

Booked online for a free tour of the Capitol Building. Absolutely fascinating insight into the birth of a nation as well as how the US Government is run now as well. Informative and funny guide. Highly recommended

During our congressman's arranged personal tour, we experienced a three hour "lock-down" as everyone else did in the Capitol that day due to a "shooter" entering the Capitol! Needless to say we will always remember the tour and all that went with it. The Capitol is overwhelming, both architecturally and symbolically. Our guide was excellent, knowledgeable of history, of congress'... More

Pre book your ticket. Note the limit on bag sizes allowed through security. Thousands of people do these tours every day and they run like clockwork. We had a great guide who hailed from Cameroon. Missed the opportunity to visit both chambers due to time constraints and wish I had. Restaurant was a bit like a school canteen but overall... More

When I was on active duty, I lived in Arlington, VA. One of the joys of living there was being able to attend concerts on the lawn of the Capitol. On the 4th of July holiday, Labor Day, and a few others, the National Symphony would perform for the public FOR FREE. It was great! At the Capitol, it was... More

Lots of imposing neo-classical buildings, guns, sun glasses and manicured lawns. Occasional horse drive bys kept everyone chipper.

We did a free guided tour of the Capitol. Our tour guide was amazing and explained the role of congress etc. in simple terms that we (as Australians) we able to understand. Lots of amazing artwork and statues. Well worth the visit. And did I mention its free?
