- Steph SBristol, United Kingdom94 contributionsNot the White House but a fantastic alternativeSadly we found that we couldn’t submit a request to visit the White House for the time we were in Washington as it’s simply not possible right now for UK citizens. My trusty guide book said that the visitors centre was a great alternative and I have to say it wasn’t wrong. We arrived early as we wanted to do the Monument after and we needed to get tickets for that so we arrived for 7:30am opening and of course it was dead. Only a few visitors trickled in while we walked round but we mostly had the place to ourselves. There are many interesting items from past Presidents as well as a detailed history of the White House and all its former occupants. I would allow yourself an hour, or just slightly more to take everything in. I’d love to be able to visit the actual White House one day but I definitely came away from the visitors centre feeling enriched with knowledge. Well worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 October 2023
- FSUgonolesLittleton, Colorado12 contributionsWorth visiting every once in awhileInteresting exhibits on the White House and its former occupants. Exhibits include items such as furniture, dishes, decorations, photos, former occupants, etc. and there is a gift shop inside. The exhibits were worth seeing but we didn't get the impression there are constant additions to the collection.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 December 2023
- Kevin BMount Juliet, Tennessee3,902 contributionsNice museum! This is a separate building from The White House and it's located a few blocks away. You don't need a tour pass to enter here like with The White House and it's a nice place to visit along with the actual White House (or instead if you can't get a tour). It houses a large museum to The White House and has a great amount of information inside. It also houses a nice gift shop, so you can get souvenirs here (there's a small gift shop inside The White House too, but this is the big one). It's a nice little museum and I would recommend coming here!Visited May 2023Written 12 January 2024
- dkallenCookeville, Tennessee29 contributionsSmall but informative. Good gift shop!Quiet little gem. Great video about recent families who have lived in the White House telling what they found exciting about being in the White House. Great little shop; has past White House ornaments. Not all years, but they have several to choose from. Great sitting area if someone in your group needs to rest. Clean restrooms. Close to Reagan Building where you can get a quick lunch.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 January 2024
- LesleyDublinDublin, Ireland259 contributionsWorth visitingWe hadn't heard about this Visitors Centre until the girl in the Capitol gift shop mentioned it. It is quite near the White House but check it on the map. It was a very good museum with various artifacts from the White House over the years and lots of information about it. There was a film with Reflections from presidents and other photographs on TV screen. There is also a gift shop. It's a very spacious museum. There was no entry fee. There is security screening at the entry. We were there in early March and there were very few people visiting. I really enjoyed the visit and would highly recommend it.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2024
- moodbluWest Valley City, Utah1,495 contributionsGreat Intro to Seeing the White HouseAt the White House Visitors Center, our US History Tour group was shown a film about life at the White House, featuring quotes, videos, and pictures from people who had lived there. There were artifacts and displays about the presidents and families, a scale model of the building, and other interesting information. I enjoyed a cute interactive quiz with a table, showing favorite foods of a number of presidents, and you guess which president it was—two of the foods were squirrel soup, and jelly beans. There was a small gift shop where I chose my favorite from a number of official White House Christmas ornaments. This Visitors Center was a great intro before going to see the White House and grounds.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 May 2024

- Donna-Marie LKnutsford, United Kingdom1,083 contributionsReally enjoyable butAs we couldn’t go inside the White House we decided to visit the visitor centre . Not too much of a queue. Loved all the exhibitions especially the video with all the past presidents, watched it twice . Loved seeing all the photos and seeing the menu and place settings from when our late queen dined at the White House My big but was the vicious security guards No need for it at all I hate been shouted at and it spoilt the visitVisited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 June 2024
- JackOld Bethpage, New York3,388 contributionsWhite House museumThe White House Visitors Center is usually the meeting point for the tours of the White House. I unfortunately was unable to reserve a tour of the White House since they are very competitive, so I thought I would check out the visitor center. I’m glad I did, the visitor center was more like a museum. It had many artifacts from the White House and shared a lot of history. There was also a gift shop. I highly recommend coming here.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 June 2024
- Jaskel08California355 contributionsLearn about the White HouseIf you can’t get tickets for the White House tour, this is the next best thing. Entry is free. On timed entry – you can enter at any time. Inside is air conditioned, with water and clean bathroom (which is a godsend during the hot humid summer months). The Visitor Center has exhibits describing the White House itself and it’s history. Lots of information. Some of it is interactive. Small gift shop. Definitely worth a stop.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 June 2024

The museum holding historic artefacts and more of the most important building in America - The White House. You can't go up close to the White House but all the preserved artefacts in the visitor centre make up for the over hyped real thing. And the best part - its free of charge.
Do check out the gift shop, its amazing.

We were unable to get a tour of the White House, so we went here. On my last DC trip I did get to tour the White House so I hadn't went here. This is an informative place with lots of artifacts from the White House. There is quite a bit of information and a nice short film as well. You probably don't need to spend more than an hour or so here. The gift shop is nice and you can purchase White House Christmas ornaments from the past up through the current year. We opted for the 2022 White House Ornament which will go on our tree at Christmas. It is very close to the White House and no admission charge. Also, it opens at 7:30am (not 11am as it says here) so you can go early and get an early start to your day since most museums don't open until 10 or 11am.

It's not easy to get tickets and access to the White House these days. Not like in the good old days when people could just line up and get in the same day. Unless you're among the lucky few to get tickets (best chance is by requesting through your Congressional Representative), you might enjoy the exhibits in the White House Visitors Center. They have lots of displays about the history of the White House and interesting videos of president's speeches and events that took place at the White House.

Very nice starting point before visiting the White house. Very strict on items allowed inside the center. Do not bring cigarette lighters. Lighters are strictly forbidden. Metal detectors are at the front entrance. Once inside, a very nice set of exhibits showing all sorts of events during presidential tenures. Nice gift area. This year's White House Christmas ornament salutes Jimmy Carter. It is in the shape of an anchor and has a small insert explaining the design of the ornament. Nice memento.

We went right after it opened in the morning to avoid lines b/c I read they limit #'s right now, and it was great- not many people, easy to move around wherever and read things, etc. I didnt expect a whole lot and wasn't sure my husband would like it (i thought it might just be a lot of photos and china and random memorabilia) but he really enjoyed it as well as my 12 yr olds! There were great photos & memorabilia but lots of other interesting factoids and stories about life in the WH. Definitely recommend this especially since WH tours are so challenging to come by (not even sure they're doing them currently). On the flip side, while understandable & necessary, it was a bummer how blockaded the actual WH is now compared to my childhood :(.

I visited here in August 2024. I have visited the White House visitors center several times before. The visitors center opens at 7:30 am. I got here at 8:30 am and it was not very busy yet. On this visit I went through every exhibit and artifact carefully. It covers the history of the White House, the various Presidents and First Ladies and a lot more. There is a gift shop. Next time I hope to visit the White House but the visitor center is very worthwhile.

If you really want to know about the White House through its history, then you need to visit here. Do it before visiting the White House itself, if you managed to snag a tour. This center is quiet, informative, and very interesting. Full of facts and items from the White House.

Is there a shuttle bus from the visitor center to the white house?

Sorry for the delay in responding. My Tripadvisor alerts don't appear to be working, No, not as far as I am aware. It's about a 10 minute easy walk

Do you need an ID (drivers license) to take a tour of the White House?
Written 21 July 2022
The only way to tour the White House is to make a request of a Congressional Office (it can be House or Senate). They forward it to the White House along with your availability and about two weeks before your scheduled visit, you get notice from the White House whether you are given a tour or not (don't get your hopes up, demand far exceeds supply so the farther out you can make your request the better). Yes, you will need a government issued ID (passport, DL, etc)

When touring the White House, how strict are the camera requirements. Not sure if mine is passable or not. How can I find out before going on the tour?
Written 28 August 2018
The answer is simple. You can take pics after the last security check point until you leave. You can not do video. At the last door where you leave , give enough space for yourself and others to leave before taking any outside pcs. The guards don't want you hanging near the exit.
We just got back from our tour July 2018. Have fun!

Is there an Oval Office replica or the opportunity to sit at the “President’s” desk?
Written 7 May 2018
Yes and no. Yes there are replicas of the Oval Office but not one in Washington DC. You can go to what is known as a Presidential Library, most have replicas of the Oval Office, however there are only 4 that allow you to set behind the desk: Richard Nixon in California, William Clinton in Arkansas, George Bush and George W Bush in Texas.

Do I need to take my passport to visit the White House museum. I am a visitor from the UK
Written 16 July 2017
Hi Frances :
No, you don't need your Passport to gain entry to the "White House Visitor Center" - as other contributors have indicated, there is a security check, which includes a "scan" similar to that at an Airport.
You should allocate about an hour-and-a-half to view the various Exhibits + visit the (excellent) Shop. Bear in mind, by the way, the "Center" closes early (4 p.m.)
Enjoy your visit to the wonderful City of Washington D.C. !
