When you're trying to figure out where you're going to see the next box office Oscar-worthy hit, you might try the Avalon Theater. Gorgeous old world architecture, great independent movies, a friendly staff (thanks Luis!), and a small but well-stocked beer/wine/coffee cafe. Best of all,...More

It's been quite a while since I've seen a film in the Avalon's main theater. Holds about 1-2,000 people. Excellent sound, tired but comfortable seats. Art and Indie films. The four of us saw Hanks and Streep in the film about the Washington Post's publication...More

I attended a one-night movie showing with pre-show VIP access. There is a cafe attached to the theater. It was packed during the pre-show mixer, but the servers kept the line moving. I don't recall the brand of wine I had, but it was pretty...More

We liked this theatre. It's a well-restored 100+ year old place. The seats are modern and comfy. They serve beer, wine, ice cream, milkshakes along with the usual movie fare. The staff are great, clearly happy to be working for the nonprofit theatre. Lots of...More

We had a good visit for Loving Vincent. Clean and well-maintained theater, cafe was very friendly. Only complaint is parking. You can park a ta meter for 2 hours with change, or pay-by-phone (which we can't do). Or you can park 2 hours on the...More

We went for the first time since this theater was renovated -- and were so surprised. A real gem. Good film selection. Friendly people at ticketing and concessions. Really feels like neighborhood theater. Only downside is it's not very close to metro, but still walkable...More

The Avalon has come a long way from the days when it nearly had to shut down back in the 70's. They've added an elevator funded by donations from the surrounding community. They've cleaned up the two screening areas. And they've gotten a lot more...More

This is a wonderful old theater in the grand theater house tradition. The neighborhood saved it from bulldozers and formed a non-profit to continue operating it as a first run movie theater. There is a huge downstairs theater and a much smaller upstairs one.
