This grat collection is housed in the same location as the American portrait museum. You should plan several hours to see both.

We were very disappointed in our visit to the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Although their holdings are large, not that many truly good or famous paintings were on display during our visit. I sound so grumpy compared to the many positive reviews, but it's frustrating...More

The American Art Museum is a well curated museum that is a must see for those interested in tracing the development of American art and artists. The guided tours are also very good!

One of the best museums in town, in a town of great museums altogether, and even better, it's in the heart of the hopping Chinatown/Gallery area and open later than most museums, until 7:00 pm on a lot of nights. So if you're visiting you...More

The collections are well-curated and well-presented, and offer a fascinating cross-section of all eras of American art. The building it is in is a work of art in itself. Highly recommended!

Great American art history. Be sure to wear your good walking shoes as there is a lot to see! Nice Kennedy room and president's paintings.

This museum is huge. I really enjoyed the portraits of the all of the presidents. So much amazing art here. Everything from modern to older works. Impossible to see it all.

One could spend hours there. My limit for any museum is about 90 minutes. This museum is centrally located downtown and it's free to enter. I would recommend one visit to the American Art side and second visit to the... More
