AA soldier interpreter greets you and is quite knowledgeable. Some primary historical documents on view. I like the pictures of elected AA during reconstruction and the Medal of Honor recipients ( you will be surprised and there are a lot of untold stories here!) This museum is currently the only one I am aware of that focuses on the role... More

This memorial was beautifully made and occupies a crowded corner of a popular social hang out. I wish is was better maintained and contained more explanation

This museum should be a part of EVERY historical Washington DC tour itinerary! This is a hidden historical gem that is eye opening, educational and narrated perfectly by a period actor in AUTHENTIC Civil War attire! This museum is a MUST-SEE that should be a part of every history-buff's and ordinary tourists itinerary! Visitors from all over the world were... More

A must when in DC. We were able to get same day tix standing in line. They gave out 300. Don't know if that's usual. Our times were for 3:00 pm, but we were able to get in at 2:15. Don't know if that's usual either. Museum closes at 5:00, so we were only able to cover 1 1/4 out... More

The museum does a great job of presenting the role of African Americans in the Civil War and the memorial is good. The museum is well curated, accessible and well laid out. It provides information and an overview of a history that to some extent has been neglected in the past.

This small but information-packed museum will appeal to anyone with an interest in Black history or in U.S. Civil War history. Exhibits and artifacts. Free. A little off the beaten path but worth the time.

The role of African Americans in the Civil War has been minimally covered. The Memorial has a wall behind it engraved with the name of the African Americans who fought in the war. The memorial statue stands across the street from the museum. Entry fee is by donation. When I was there, a very informed young man was dressed in... More

We visited this museum in early March 2016. Though the museum is relatively small, it contains some very well thought out display boards and artefacts relating to black American contributions to the Civil War. Our tour guide (if I remember rightly his name was James) really made the visit. He was enthusiastic and incredibly knowledgeable about black American history, and... More

This is a relatively tiny museum but the displays are powerful and well thought out. The staff are very knowledgeable and accessible. The museum tells an important story about African American contributions to the American experience -- going beyond the Civil War. Found a place to park on the street, but if you go really early, the museum has a... More
