A Good Birding Venue
Aug 2021
We visited this remote refuge as birders. I had been there many years ago, but had seen little of it. We explored more this time, taking the loop road and visiting Aguirre Lake which had water for the first time in several years.

This is a fine place to view wildlife. It is clearly well cared for, and the wildlife is abundant.

Plan a stop in Arivaca for a meal at La Gitana.

Fun drive through the desert grassland, unfortunately little wildlife during February
Feb 2020
A fun drive through the desert grassland, unfortunately little wildlife during February. They have done a nice job of preserving the area, which was an old ranch (didn't spot one cow). The journey to/from the park takes you thought some lovely landscape and through some ghost towns.

Well Done
Feb 2020 • Couples
We did a short 3 mile hike on one of the trails, then drove to the visitors center. Even though we hiked about mid-day (not the best time to see wildlife), we did see a White tailed deer, vulture & Roadrunner on the drive to the visitors center. The Center is small (& parts are under reconstruction), but it was worth the stop. We used on of the many picnic tables & had our lunch. It’s all free! Get out & do this.

Beautiful, Wild Landscape
Jan 2020 • Family
Loved the drive to Arivaca and the visitor center. Hiked around Arivaca Cienega and spotted many birds including a pair of black vultures. Also saw mule deer, coyote and a roadrunner! The boardwalks, foot bridges and large trees made the hike/walk very unique! Even my 11 and 13 year old enjoyed themselves.

Beautiful scenery
Dec 2019 • Couples
The Pronghorn Drive is currently closed. The road is undergoing some improvements. We were there yesterday and I asked at the visitor center about the drive and was told the road was closed....there was no barrier preventing entrance to the road so we went proceeded out the road. We came up on many pickup trucks and guys with hard hats surveying what looked like a recent scraping and wetting down of the road. I asked if I needed to turn and go back and they said no go ahead and boy am I glad we did....saw a herd of 19 pronghorns...we sat and watched them for about 8 minutes before they walked on across the road and proceeded down the hill. Takes some effort to get out here but it is beautiful. The road from Arivaca to 286 is the prettiest drive.

Bird watching walk at Arivaca Cienega
Apr 2019 • Solo
During the 3 hour walk, the guide identified over 40 varieties of birds. I was able to identify 34 varieties. It is a very pleasant walk; most of the walk is suitable for people with canes but not all is suitable for wheelchairs. Nice scenery on a warm day but it would be difficult on a hot day.

Beautiful Birding Spot
Mar 2019 • Couples
We first stopped in Arivaca at the wildlife viewing area and saw lots of beautiful birds, took the walk and learned about the main location. Then we traveled over to the main location to see the museum and the wildlife there. It was a lovely day trip for us from Green Valley.

Visitor Center was informative and the Rangers knowledgeable and friendly
Feb 2019 • Couples
There are lots of wildlife at this refuge and depending on the time of year and the weather you might see a lot or just a little. There were lots of birds and we glimpsed a Bobcat and saw four Pronghorn Elk grazing. As we tried to get closer they ran away which was an even more amazing sight. The property was once a working ranch and is steeped in history. The visitor center is housed in the original adobe structure and the original wood corral still stands. We did two short hikes and then drove the Pronghorn loop which takes about an hour.

Went on a hike with docents and then went to the Refuge Visitors Center. This is a special place and well worth the trip from Tucson.
