Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We ended up spending a lot of time doing this. My wife and daughter did a lot while the boys and I went on rides too.
The artists do a great job teaching people with no artistic ability how to draw Disney characters. We walked away with several drawings that you get to keep.
The staff does a great job getting people in and out.
Would highly recommend.

Well worth the experience. Let’s face it, lines are long for rides and food and it’s hot, so this is a great way to get out of the sun and into a room with ac and comfy chairs. I went to the course that was teaching how to draw Stitch as Stitch is my favorite Disney character. The instructor made the 15 minute course fun and I was surprised how well I drew Stitch even though I have absolutely no drawing skills at all. And it’s free, so you get to keep and take home your masterpiece if you like. If you’re looking to do something different while at Disney California Adventure, check out the Animation Academy. They do have a schedule on when certain character courses will be taught and at what time.

Not technically about the Animation Academy (which sounds great, but we did not try it), we stood in line inside the Disney Animation Building for a character meeting (Elsa/Anna/Olaf). Inside the large open space, they project scenes from Disney classics, showing not only the footage, but also the alternative angles/viewpoints and pencil/draft sketches, all simultaneous and adjacent to each other. Most of these are song numbers or well-known scenes from Disney movies. Although not an "attraction" per se, I could sit on the floor there almost all day and be enveloped by the visuals and music. Really worth seeing.

Air conditioned room, comfortable seats, 20+ minutes away from the crowds and a fun exercise in artistic futility. What's not to like about that? I do wish they would use traditional Disney characters more often to play with. Most of the new ones I've never heard of. Plus, you get to take your artistic creation home with you, at no extra charge!

We did this later on in the day/evening so according to the schedule I saw posted idky we drew daisy duck but, we did. Really wish we drew someone else but other than that the experience was really awesome and you get to keep your drawing as a souvenir! The setting was really cool, the instructor was fitting with his personality and the class was your typical comical classroom vibes with a few misfits.

I am not an artist, but I still love the Animation Academy at the Disneyland California Adventure Park. Even though my drawing didn't come close to that of the real Disney artist that led the class, it was still fun and a great way to escape the rain that hit the park that day. The waiting area of the Animation Academy is shared with other attractions and features multiple screens of different sizes and shapes that show the creative process that takes place in creating some of the iconic animated scenes from favorite Disney movies. I didn't get to return to the Academy during my visit, but I know one of my daughters returned at least two more times since she truly is an artist. It is definitely one of the highlights for her when we visit Disneyland!

As many times as we've been to California Adventures, we never gave the Animation Academy a chance. This last visit was a first for our family. Our daughter who is nine is really into art and wanted to check it out. It was such a fun experience even for those who were not into art. I never knew I could draw! It doesn't take up a lot of time either. They have a real animation artist that takes you through step by step on how to draw a specific character from a Disney animation film. Our animator taught us how to draw Sully from Monster's Inc that day. It changes up all the time, so each experience will be different I'm sure. Both our daughters had a blast trying to draw one of their favorite characters. My toddler just scribbled away on one of the sheets of paper they give you with a pencil. It is held in an auditorium room so you can see the artist from any seat and follow along easily. Try it! You might be surprised how much you like it. I know we were!

We were in here to draw Disney characters, and to meet Elsa and Anna. There are other activities in the building (Turtle Talk with Crush is one) but we haven't done that yet.

Having gone to Disneyland many times before, I don't know why we have never done the "draw a Disney character" activity. Maybe it's because it takes about 1/2 hr and we'd rather go on rides. This time, we made it a point to try and it is so so fun.

Regardless of artistic talent, you will come out with a sketch of whatever Disney character the artist is doing. And there are no erasers! We have done Baymax and Simba so far. In the morning, a list of characters being taught that day (every 1/2 hr) is posted. During the 100th anniversary celebration, they do some 100th exclusive (Simba was one). We did not know what we would be drawing until we were inside.

Great souvenirs as you get to keep your drawings.

You go into a theatre setup and are given paper and pencil. Then one of the animators goes through with you how to draw a Disney character. We drew Goofy. Surprisingly, it was pretty straightforward to get the basics of how to get the shapes and then get the face together. Good fun, even for non-artists like me!
