Buckskin Pass... you go

Buckskin Pass... Follow W Maroon Tr. past Maroon Lake. You go right, up the East Maroon/Snowmass Trail just before Crater Lake. The fall colors are super. Parts are steep.

Buckskin Pass is approximately a 3.8 mile hike over well defined trails, much of it above treeline, with 3150 vertical feet. Bring poles, they will seriously help with the rocky trail, as you move through several areas of scree that are remnants of avalanches, etc. It is definitely worth it, as the views from the pass down to Snowmass lake... We actually did the willow pass trail, but passed through buckskin pass too. The ascending trek was moderately difficult, but well worth it!! I don't have injured knees; however, my knees were aching by the time we got to willow pass, so I would recommend trekking poles. I also recommend bringing bear spray, because I saw fresh markings and bear... More

If you start early, and are in good shape, and acclimated to the altitude, and have hiking experience and ALL the proper gear to bring with you, including food, water, rain gear and warm clothing, this is a great hike which will take up most of the day...have RESPECT for the mountains as they will NOT bend to your will....you... This trail is for experienced hikers. Steep climb. Much snow on trails early in summer. Spectacular views. Take your teenage son or daughter, one on one for one, of the most meaningful days of your life. Share with them what God has created. The memories and visions will last forever.

I was visiting family in Denver and wanted to take a hike to remember. Being from Pittsburgh Pa. I wasn't really altitude conditioned. It took about 8 hours total but the time went by so fast. Well it didn't disappoint. When you finally reach the pass it just takes your breath away!!!The drive on i70 was just breathless as well.... More

If you want a real workout, this is the hike for you! Nearly a 14er but not quite. Heck of a view from the top! Be sure to be prepared. Bring plenty of water, food, and hiking poles will serve you well on this trail! Do wear proper footwear, with good tread. Flip flops and sandals would be a huge... More

I hiked this Sept. 26, 2014. We started at Maroon Lake. The Aspens were in full color and it was amazing. Pyramid Peak which is to your left to start and then behind you on your way up to the pass becomes bigger and more amazing the higher you climb. I enjoyed every part of this hike. It requires effort... More

Buckskin Pass is a beautiful hike. We climbed at around 9 AM on a Monday in August and the crowds were not an issue whatsoever. For the most part, we had the trail to ourselves, and the few people we saw on the way up were friendly and polite. We shared the summit with about ten people, but no one... More

Did this hike on a weekday in July, just went up to the pass and back. Was fantastic that it wasn't crowded at all and we didn't encounter too many hikers until we got back down towards Crater Lake again (then the masses appeared). Not a technical hike at all and very easy to see and stay on the trail.... More
