Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I came down Smuggler Mountain Trail from Hunter Creek Trail on the advice of my hotel, and I'm glad I did! This would have been less interesting up and down the same road, but is perfectly lovely for a descent. A very doable hike for most people staying in Aspen (when there's no snow).

The historical society has a jeep tour that is incredible. Our jeep driver I cannot say enough about her she was amazing and our guide was a gentleman and he too was sooo knowledgeable and nice. This is one thing everyone should do

There is plenty of parking at the base of Smuggler Mountain at no charge. The walk is steady up hill ,
not too steep . There is a very nice platform near the top with a great view of the city of Aspen and the
surrounding valley , this should take about forty minuets.

Hiked this trail two times during our trip. Thought it would be a good route for our more novice friends. Got accosted three times from older locals for not separating ourselves. Told to go home six times. We simply did not wear mask while hiking in the outdoors. We were our own group of four who hiked the side of the road. Road not very attractive as a trail. Views are very nice. Would not recommend during this time of COVID. Many other attractive trails with fewer locals.

We decided to try this hike because it was called moderate and it was pretty short. Once we got there we found that there are lots of options to go further to see different mine sites, etc. The views of Aspen and the surrounding areas cannot be beat. It is a nice wide trail (mostly) and paved so easy to distance yourself during this Covid crisis. It's easy to find and a great hike!

Once you have acclimatized to Aspen elevation at around 8000 ft, try the early morning walk up Smuggler Mountain Road. It's a good workout and gives you fabulous views of the valley of Aspen. It is quickly rewarding, but takes quite a bit of effort and about 1.5 hours to reach the viewing platform. Just when you think you've missed it, you'll come across it with various sign posts. It is vet worthwhile, and the wild flowers are lovely. We fortunately didn't see bears! The descent is only 30 minutes, making it a fabulous 2 hr round trip before breakfast! Don't pass it up!

This is a very nice trail up to an observation deck. It is slightly more than a one mile hike to the deck and the view is terrific (see photo), but don't try this on a summer day after 2pm because it is fully in the sun and it gets REALLY HOT!!!

This is a tough hike. It's up...straight up with a few switch backs on a dirt road. Full sun, too.
The goal is an observation deck, which does have a fantastic view of 4+ beautiful peaks (14'ers!) that are backdrops to the city of Aspen. But this hike is for those who are in shape due to the intensity. I'd rate it strenuous. (and I can't believe that mountain bikers even try to go up this!)
I'd suggest going up the Hunter Lake trail instead (and taking the Hunter Lake cross trail to the observation tower, then going down the Smuggler Mountain road trail.....except the Hunter Lake trail is also uphill the entire way! The only benefit is that the H.Lake trail is shaded and alongside a beautiful creek, and then passes through a meadow that gives great views.

Just a few steps out of downtown is Smuggler Mt. whether you walk or mountain bike getting to the overlook is worth the effort. It is most amazing to look down on town and across the valley to Ajax. Do it in the morning and your day will be better!

Very popular trail to hike in Aspen, do it early the sun can get awfully hot on the mountain in the afternoon plus certain times you need to be aware of the afternoon thunder that rolls in. Great views of Aspen. Worth the trip and moderate hike.
