Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My tour guide took us to Rio Frio Cave, and I'm so glad we visited! It's pretty easy to access, and the walk along the river, with sunlight filtering through the trees as you approach the cave is magical. Climbing around inside is pretty easy, too. There's light coming in from two ends, so visibility is pretty good. The best part is there was virtually no one else there. I wish I had seen some bats, but maybe we visited at the wrong time of day.

Please be advised that if you drive yourself here, have a pickup truck or a 4 wheel drive, at minimum. Maybe a big SUV that has height from the ground. Also, make sure you’re an extremely confident and experienced driver, those muddy tracks and ruts are no joke. You also don’t have any cell reception, in the event that you run into any trouble.

Otherwise, this is a jaw dropping and awe inspiring place. A must visit! The massive 65-ft opening alone is noteworthy and then you can hike into the massive cave itself. It is a bit slippery, so have shoes with good grips. There’s also a little sandy “beach” at the bottom that you can hike down to.

This is a must visit when you are in the area. This can be done with young kids but ensure that everyone is wearing shoes with good grips. It is, however, not stroller friendly, so an infant/toddler will need to be on a baby carrier.

Incredibly Large Cave to walk and take in. Very accessible from the parking lot.
The area is right smack dab in the middle of the Forest as you will see as you enter the road that leads to it. We unfortunately did not see any other wildlife except bug. The entry was huge. You can walk in and around to see it in it entirety. The geological structures are fascinating. They is a nature walk around the tunnel as well. Bring bug spray but worth it. Good for young children too.

After a bumpy 30 mile drive on not so good roads (4 wheel drive or high clearance vehicle recommended. We had 2 wheel truck with an excellent driver.) we arrived at Rio Frio Caves. What a pleasant place for those of us who are not pro spelunkers. We scrambled over rocks and into the cave full of stalactites, stalagmites, a river, and sand bars. You could walk through to the twin entrance if you are willing to climb over things. They have recently added a picnic area and bathroom facilities near the road. Roads are being improved so be ready for construction. Definitely wear comfy hiking shoes or sandals. The best part is that we were the only ones there!

I would def make this a must see if trekking down to caracol. There is not much to do but it’s a really cool looking cave. It’s great for photos. I would not say the most impressive thing we saw but since it’s such a small time commitment if in the area, I would do.

We visited Rio Frio Cave during a self-driving trip to Rio On Pools and Big Rock Falls. We were stunned by how large the cave is, and you can just go in, no entrance fee, climb around and explore. It's big, and the entrance is stunning. Definitely worth the visit if you are exploring other sites in the area.

This is a great spot for those that are afraid of closed in spaces, but want to see a cave. It is more of a TALL tunnel. The cave has large openings on both ends. You can't see the far end until you walk up to the entrance though. It is TOTALLY free! There is an outhouse there - but it is not for the faint of heart. There are picnic tables as well. You can climb basically anywhere you want - no guide needed. If you don't have a rental car you can hire a taxi driver in San Ignacio to take you there - and hit the Rio On Pools area in the same day. (That's a free site as well - with no tour guide needed). We took my 88 year old father, who had a broken foot at the time - and he wsa able to walk around a bit.

Impressive cave. Beautiful surroundings. Worth a trip if you're in the area. Takes about 30 minutes to hike into and out of, depending on how many rocks you want to climb on. I recommend a visit on your way back from Caracol.
