Anyone willing can learn from Emmitt

Emmitt can build a drum and drummer. Anyone willing to listen will learn the basics and have fun. Very understanding teacher.

Hi David - thanks so much for the review, but I think you left it in the wrong place! PG has two drum schools, and it sounds like you went to Emmeth Young's Maroon Creole Drum School - I know he would be hugely grateful if you leave him a review in the right place! Of course you are more... More

Found this by accident while visiting friends in the area. Highlight of our trip. Even with a broken arm (my 15 year old) & a mom with little coordination we experienced this amazing cultural activity of learning, listening, and participating. It was EPIC. So much history, vibes, energy and love wrapped up in PG! Thanks to Ronald & his beautiful... More

My girlfriend and I unexpectedly found ourselves with a day or two to spare in Punta Gorda while we waited for hurricane Earl to blow over, so dropped an email to Ray at the Garifuna drumming school to arrange an email for the next day. In the end I couldn't have been happier that we got stuck in that town,... More

One of the highlights of our trip to Punta Gorda was learning about Garifuna culture and learning to play Garifuna drums from Ray McDonald at the Warasa Drum School. Ray is a wonderful and patient teacher in addition to being a superb drummer and singer. We enjoyed our evening of drumming in a relaxed and fun environment. We even got... More

We had a great morning today with Ray and his family. Loved learning about the culture and helping to make the drums. Ray is so cute and fun to be around and his energy is just an added bonus. Don't miss this if you are in Punta Gorda

I say this because I was here over Easter weekend 2016, and into the following week, and the Chocolate Factory has been closed the entire time! Emory, on the other hand, responded to my e-mail for a lesson, and came to the hostel to pick me up on his motor bike. He drives me to a beautiful "suburb" of PG... More

I was lucky enough to experience drumming while on the Toledo Culture trail. For one and half hours I was mesmerized by Ronald and his family. When I arrived, a large group had to cancel, so I had a private lesson. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would love it so much. The history of the Garifuna... More

Thank you so much for such a glowing review! I think this is our favourite review of all time - you're not our first and certainly won't be our last grandparent at Warasa (we had a 72 year old grandmother and her 14 yr old granddaughter do a half-day package with us in the past!) but you definitely left the... Ray McDonald's Warasa Garifuna drummers came to Cotton Tree Lodge while my boyfriend and I were staying there for a night of drumming and dancing. We had an absolute blast learning about the Garifuna culture, listening to the drumming and singing, and learning some dance moves! We learned the "Punta" and they had everyone staying in the lodge up and... More
