This museum was fairly small, and contained a lot of information about Mayan and other indigenous clothing since the 1500s. But it felt dated and in need of some fresh and engaging / interactive exhibits. Definitely NOT a museum for young children or older adults (since the lighting was quite low for reading the materials). Some of the few videos were not working and some of the exhibits did not have English translations for the descriptions. I'd estimate about one-third were Spanish only. We did enjoy learning about Mayan clothing, but felt the museum lacked context on Mayan history and culture. And the museum is surrounded by beautiful courtyard and university colleges. So save time afterward to savor the scenery.

A wonderful museum in a beautiful spot. Set amongst greenery and a nice walk to get there (But plenty of parking and a drop off point). The textiles are beautifully displayed and the staff explain and make you feel really welcome.

The architecture of the museum is in itself worth a visit.

I visited on a Monday when other museums all seem to be closed, so this was my only choice. But I would highly recommend it at any time.

Excellent textiles and going there before buying textiles in other cities was very helpful. Gift shop was expensive but did have items that I didn't see in other locations.

This is the same location as the Popol Vuh (Pre-Columbian and colonial art) Museum and Lienzo de Quauhquechollan exhibit. A combination ticket for all three museums/exhibits can be purchased for Q75. I spent 4 hours at the exhibits but could have spent longer. Well worth my $10.

I disagree with another reviewer who complained about the location and taxi fares. I'm over 60 and female but walked back to my Zone 9 hotel alone.

A very well organized museum in a " rich kids" university... Very expensive if compared to other museums in the country, and dare NOT to go by your own means, unless you have a rent a car of decide to pay huge money on Taxi fee like me... Once there, with so much to see, and payed a huge ammount to the taxi outside...

This is an excellent museum that focuses on the textiles of Guatemala - the cultural, economic, and technological changes that have shaped the use of fabric in rural and urban settings. The exhibits are well organized and signed in English and Spanish. This is a rather colorful and engaging museum on the grounds of the Universidad Francisco Marroquín. It is a small museum that can be seen in under two hours and goes well with the Museo de Popol Vuh next door. While open during the week, it is only open 9am-1pm on Saturdays during the weekend. Also, strolling about the university grounds is quite pleasant. One suggestion - if you take a taxi here like I did, set a pick up time for when you are done. Its almost impossible to hail a cab from here.

Somewhere near the back of this museum is a collection of about 70 paintings by Carmen Pettersen of men and women in native costumes. She wanted to record these, as an artist, before they became even less commonly worn than they were when she started (in the early 1970's, I believe). These are first rate paintings: expressive as images, and of great documentary interest too, of course. It's a pity that they are more or less at the back of the museum, as one of the last things you would normally come to in a visit. Indeed, you might not even know that they are there, since they are in a room of their own. But don't miss 'em!!

The wonderful variety of colorful clothing and head gear of the traditional Mayan people is a great part of the Guatemala experience. Museo Ixchel gives an in-depth history and background of the Mayan clothing and textile traditions that added greatly to our Guatemala stay. It's a new museum, well kept up and with lots of signage in English as well as three documentaries in either English or Spanish.

My wife is a "knitter" and dragged me with her to visit this museum of indigenous textiles and clothing. Thought I would hate it, but boy was I impressed. If you love history and appreciate museums that are interesting and well designed, you will thoroughly enjoy your visit to this museum. I can't wait to return for a second visit.

Set on the beautiful campus of Univ. Francisco Marroquin, this museum tells the Mayan story in cloth. It gives you great context of the Mayan culture and helps you understand the differences between Mayan groups just through their clothing (which many still wear today).
