- Julie W9 contributionsGreat exhibits to learn about Mayan history/cultureThis is a great little museum on the university campus, and shares a shaded courtyard with the Museo Ixchel so it's easy to visit both. Great displays of Mayan artifacts, carvings, murals, etc. from different areas and time periods. Very safe location with ample parking and easy dropoff/pickup for Uber. Definitely worth a visit!Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 9 November 2023
- jbills2007Tulsa, Oklahoma47 contributionsGive Museo Popol Vuh a visit!Must see museum! This should be # 1 on your list of things to do/see while in Guatemala City. Not a huge museum, very manageable with cool AC and all signs in both Spanish and English. Small gift shop available. Definitely worth the time. Right across the parking lot is the textile museum, so you score twice in one location. 45 Q admittance for tickets, ($5.62 US) You can easily see both museums in a morning or afternoon.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 February 2024
- Penelope20 contributionsUniversity Museum - Popol VuhThis is a fantastic introduction to Mayan history, along with the textile museum on the same site. And if you go to the museums first before a trip to markets, it puts all the work, all the skill, into perspective. I learnt new things, and I was fascinated by the jade work and obsidian. I had a guide who was also able to tell me much more how it all linked together. I highly recommend incorporating it into a visit to the city.Visited April 2024Travelled on businessWritten 21 April 2024

It’s well done, but there is a limited amount of pieces. Also, the descriptions don’t have dates, which would be a welcome addition. Entry is 45 Quetzal.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024

We arrived late and only had a few minutes but the lady working the desk so so kind and kept the museum open for us for extra time. It's amazing the things that have come from the Maya sites that are on display. I appreciated how the small museum moves from oldest to youngest so you could see the progression of their arts.

I loved the museum. It walks you through Maya history by time period. There are many stunning exhibits. You will not be disappointed.
NOTE 1. If going by taxi make sure you select the correct Popol Vuh. There is more than one option
2. There is a lovely cafe in the University grounds near the Bibliotheque/Library

This is an extremely interesting museum. You should go with a guide. What grabbed me the most is the jade artwork, facemasks, etc. It is an extremely hard mineral and I simply cannot comprehend how could they do all those intricate carvings without the proper tools/materials (that we know of).

The museum is located on the campus of Universidad Francisco Marroquín. It is a nice walk through a very pretty residential area. The museum is a reasonably sized collection of Mayan pottery and artifacts chronologically arranged in a comprehensive way in a series of rooms, dating from circa 2000 BC to 1800's AD. It's worth visiting. The entrance is Q35; if you want to be able to take pictures there is a fee of Q15.

Some important stuff here. Logically laid out along the time line, with good explanations and all put into context. Somebody should drag the curators of the archeological museum here to show them how it should be done. If you only have time to visit one of the two places, go to this one. In fact even if you have time to go to both go to this one then go somewhere else and avoid disappointment.

This museum is located on the campus of the Universidad Francisco Marroquin right next to the Museo Ixchel del Traje Indigena and it's possible to see both museums in 2 to 3 hours. The entrance fee is about $5.00 (US dollars). Lots of interesting pottery and statues from the pre-Classic, Classic and post-Classic Mayan periods. There's an excellent explanation of the Mayan calendar cycles (19 months in a year, with 18 of them having 20 days and the 19th month having only 5 days) as well as the Bak'tum which is equivalent to 394.25 years and which caused all the excitement over the "end of the world' in December 2012 based on the Mayan calendar. Explanations of exhibits were in both Spanish and English.

This museum has truly exceptional ancient Mayan artifacts and they are extremely well organized and displayed. There are many intrepretive signs in both Spanish and English. They also sell a top quality guide booklet ($15 US). The museum is in a modern building on an active University campus and everything is very clean and well done. The organization of galleries follows the cronological development of the Mayan civilization and illustrates all with excellent artifacts. The model of the city of Tikal is particularly imprerssive and made my later visit there much more understandable. This museum shares a building complex with the fine Ixchel textile museum. I'd recommend 2 hours for the Popol Vuh and an hour for Ixchel.
