I had a great experience studying Spanish here and my Spanish improved significantly after just one week. I had two teachers, Carmelina and Florinda (for morning and afternoon classes respectively) and they were both fantastic. I asked to focus on conversation over grammar, and my speaking and comprehension skills got better with each day. I also really enjoyed learning about Mayan life from them both. They were very engaging which meant I could maintain my focus through 7 and 8 hours of classes a day. My homestay, which was arranged through the school, was also excellent. Suzy was an incredibly welcoming host, and her large family meant that there was always someone home to practice Spanish with. I also really enjoyed the rowdy family dinners where I got to hear fast paced conversations which were much harder for me to follow, but also much more rewarding when I understood what was being said (as opposed to the much easier one on one conversations). It was exactly what I was hoping to get out of a homestay.

The only negative was communication before I arrived at the school. For anyone considering this school who may be put off by the disorganized email responses (like I was), it was not at all indicative of the actual experience at the school. The school was much more organized in person, and overall my experience was extremely positive and well worth the 5 stars.

The school offers very good classes for individuals, or more than one student. They provide instruction and practice regarding the students needs - young people, medical professional people, teachers, bankers, attorneys...etc. They try to meet the students' schedules 1-7 hours/day; morning or afternoon, etc. The buildings is nice, welcoming, colorful, and comfortable. They have good WiFi, which can be used before, after or during class (during class to refer to culture, meaning of words...).
The teachers at knowledgeable, professional, patient and friendly. José was my teacher, and I really liked him.
The only thing that I think the could be improved would be the placement test - to assess the student's Spanish level. It's way too long and unnecessary. The student is either familiar with certain verb tenses, sentence structures, vocabulary themes, or not familiar with them. To place a student in the proper level does not require testing the student on 10 irregular verbs, of the same category, or 10 irregular adjective, etc. They should include those parts of the test, but cut it at least in half. They can more effectively assess the student's level more quickly, and then use that time more productively. If the student is in Panajachel before the first day/hour of class, he/she should be offered the test/assessment before the actual class. The teacher just sits there, waiting for the student to take the test, and not using paid, instructional class time.
Other than the placement test, I was very happy with the school. I would highly recommend it to people in Panajachel, who want to learn Spanish. 😀

I had only one short week at Jabel Tinamit but in that time I found a group of people that aren’t just employees but are family. They are highly trained, love what they do and care about their students. They are early to school, prepared for your lesson, listen to you, engage you in conversation and challenge you to move to the next level. The activities are great. The cooking class is beyond fantastic! It was a full meal! Amazingly delicious and a wonderful time to get to know other students. I think the biggest accomplishment for the school is that they have several students that come back every year. That speaks for itself.

This is the best Spanish School I have attended. My instructor was fantastic and differentiated the lessons according to my needs and wishes. The director of the school worked very diligently to find accommodations that suited me. He was extremely honest and represented everything accurately. There were activities every day before or after lessons. I highly recommend Jabel Tinamit Spanish School.

I bring nursing students with me, to this school every year, to learn about the culture and language. I have been a student of this school for almost 5 years as well. We are always treated like family and everyone at the school is very helpful. I have a great teacher and love the convenient online method of delivery. Jabel Tinamet is the best!!! By the way, the people whose homes we stay in are fantastic!! Thank you!

I never got my $50. deposit back, had to ask for it, never got change back for an activity, had to ask for that, got evicted from the homestay after one week, they knew I was planning on 4 weeks, no explanation, got charged more for lessons and homestay than listed on their site.
Liked my teacher and the homestay was great but really hate getting ripped off. Went to another school which was far better and honest--the prices listed are what you pay. Never met the owner or his wife--no welcome to the school. Lots of Spanish schools to choose from in Guatemala, e.g. Antigua, where there is more to do and see and which are honest,

We appreciate your comments. but we have to be clear and say the truth if we are talking about honesty. 1. The deposit: yes, we request $50 dollars to all our students in order to secure their spot and when they finish the term they have confirmed, we deduct from the total amount. The reason of the deposit is to keep your teacher and homestay and not affect anybody with changes, and regards your reservation: you have booked for 4 weeks and even on Friday at the end of your first week, you said that you did not have any idea yet on what to do. The day after you said suddenly that you will go to Antigua, so remember, when you said that you would stay just for two nights and we were agree and you only paid for the two extra night and we just deduct from your $50 dollars of deposit and we gave you your change in quetzales. it was happened like that or did not? 2. "Get evicted from the homestay” no, since they have booked a place for you for a month, and you by yourself decide to go away even affecting the family because it was reserved your place for a month. 3. Our prices are what we have on the website and you know, this is the truth and you have your receipt of what you have paid for. 4. Never meet the owner: I am Gregorio and I was the person who met you at the shuttle office and walk you to the family´s house where you stayed since you got here late and we wanted to make sure that you get safe with the family and I walked with you.

Both the online and in person options were excellent! I highly recommend both of them. Great value, do not let the price fool you, you will receive an incredibly high level of service and professionalism. The entire staff is made up of some of the most friendly people I have met in my life. This is a great option for people with no, some, or lots of experience speaking Spanish. No matter your past experience, it will be worth the time to learn at this school.

This review is way overdue. I am a medical resident who wanted to improve my Spanish. I did two weeks of private classes here in Sept 2018. It was an unbelievable experience. The Spanish teachers were amazing, much better than Habla Ya in Panama. We did about two hours of grammar and two hours of medical Spanish each day. They also connected me with a medical clinic where I could volunteer a few hours a day. Unbelievable value. The homestay and food were basic, but cannot complain for the price. Would 100% return. I was hesitant about Guatemala because of safety reasons, but the town is vert safe. I would 100% recommend without hesitation over other Spanish School.

I spent only one week at Jabel Tinamit, but it was a great place to study Spanish. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The one on one Spanish lessons were useful. My lessons were focused on grammar, but I was able to have conversations with my teacher about life in Guatemala. The homestay was excellent. I stayed with a very nice family who had a nice home within walking distance of the school. They food they prepared was excellent, too.

We have studied at several Spanish Schools in Guatemala and this one is certainly among the best! It's also located in a beautiful, remote town with a wonderful and comfortable setting.
