Great Car Rental, Exceptional Customer Service

We were staying in the West End and while walking one day, stumbled upon Captain Van’s. Looking at their rates for car rentals, we decided to rent a car for the day later in the week. We picked up our car on Friday and Elizabeth really took care of us. She provided a detailed map of the island and pointed out several areas to visit, along with tips on getting around the road construction. Lots of road construction while we were there. We also spent some time learning about her, where she came from and some of the history of the Bay Islands. The car was great and everything worked out well. While I recommend the car rental from Captain Van’s, it would not have been the same without Elizabeth. She is a wonderful person and all the information about traveling on the island was perfect.

Delivered as promised. Pick up from cruise port by Elton. He was great in providing additional information. Roads in Roatan are surprisingly good and easy to drive on. Toured the island by ourselves.. If you are here on a cruise, just make sure there is no misunderstanding about the pick up time as the local time is most likely different from ship's time. Car was reasonably new ( Suzuki XL ) and had no issues. Had Apple Car Play so used Google Maps to get around and find my way.

Thanks for the positive review. I am glad everything worked out, even with the ship time difference issue, which is a new policy creating some confusion. In regards to the Suzuki XL7 SUV, it is a 2023 model, purchased 4 months ago. It's my favourite to drive, because it has air conditioned cup holders. YUP.

Captain Vans was an exceptional company to do business with. Good communication renting online. Our ship arrived late and the representative Elton from Capt. Vans was still waiting for us. What a relief. We decided to let Elton give us a tour with our shortened time frame. Not only did he give a excellant and thorough tour. He was a exceptional young man. Would recommend this company and Elton as a tour guide to all. He made our trip to Roatan a pleasure.

I highly recommend Captain Van's Rentals for anyone coming to Roatan. I was picked up at the cruise terminal and taken to the facility to get the car. The person that picked us up, Elton, was outstanding. He was helpful and explained so many aspects of the island to us. He pointed out places for us to visit and great beach spots. Everything was so easy and I would recommend this place to anyone

Terrible rental with no ac!

Just a reminder, the Captain doesn't tell you that the roads have many pot holes filled with gravel that matches the road so you can't see them until you hit one and wreck. The Captain also doesn't tell you that he has two plastic slides on the scooters that slide when you wreck so he can charge you anther 50 bucks or so even though there was no damage.

This is a late response to this review, but as the owner, I feel it necessary to respond and explain thoroughly how damage charges work on scooters/motorcycles. First of all, potholes are everywhere on this planet; especially in third world countries. We tell our clients to be aware of the roads and their surroundings, as they are responsible for damages regardless "if it was the road's fault" as many clients claim. Indeed, the local people will absolutely fill a pothole with gravel since the government won't fix the pothole in a timely fashion. The result is that vehicles incur less damage. But you still need to be aware as a renter, of holes filled with gravel and dirt. Our minimum damage charge is $50. That means if a scooter/motorcycle has been found to have any new damage without actually breaking a piece of the scooter/motorcycle, we do not replace the part, but we do charge for accumulated damage. On the other hand, if a part is actually broken by the renter, they pay to replace that part. With the fact that we rent quality Yamaha and Honda machines, their body parts do NOT shatter into pieces on impact, like you see with other cheaper made scooters/motorcycles. However, the result is obviously new scratches, scrapes and sometimes small cracks that appear after a renter hits something or hits the ground. This accumulated damage charge of $50 goes towards the eventual time, when that part has accumulated enough damage, that it needs to be replaced by us for future rental clients. In addition, during the post inspection, if it is obvious that a part is bent, due to an incident, said client will be charged the minimum damage charge. Simply put, we charge $50 if the scooter or motorcycle has been damaged in any way. We do a damage inspection before the client leaves with the rental and we also do a return inspection upon return. Unlike car rentals where body parts like fenders do not get changed, but instead get repaired with body filler and paint, scooters and motorcycles body parts are made a varying qualities of plastic. They cannot be repaired, but must be replaced. If I was to charge a client to replace an entire fender when it was only scratched from an accident, the charges would be too high. That is why we have a minimum damage charge of $50, to avoid charging clients to replace a piece; that although it obviously has been in an accident, is still functioning fine. We then point out these scratches to future clients, and they sign the inspection sheet, acknowledging that they know that part is slightly damaged (but not broken). I hope that explains things in more detail. The bottom line is that if the rental scooter or motorcycle does not experience any accidents, impact or "lay downs" then the client is not charged anything. We have been in business since 1998, and we are proud of that fact. We are fair to our clients. Please respect the rental equipment, and you will never be charged. And...stop blaming the road for a mishap. It doesn't work with me or my staff. Thanks.

Driving in Roatan

Rented a SUV from Captain Van, after communicating via e-mail - service was great, nice staff, Caesar who came to get us from the airport was great and we ended up dealing with him a bit over the course of the 3 weeks we were there, rental was a 10 year old Ford Escape, runs a little rough, but suited our purposes. Price was very good.

Excellent Opperation

Extremely helpful staff. Quality scooters (2 rented for a week) and very reasonable rates. We had a small issue with one of the scooters and they handled it immediately with zero problems. Honest staff who provided great advice on self-guided touring of the island also. This place also has a small convenience store with very low cost alcohol (the cheapest we could find) (spirits, wine and cold beer). We will definitely be back here again if we ever return to the island. Also, the Oilers are truly a terrible hockey team.
