Overview
More
Copan Ruinas valley of Kings, Sacred Valley of the Red Scarlet Macaw. Copan Ruinas is an ancient city in the mayan Empire. Located in western honduras at just under 10 minutes from the border with Guatemala el Florido. More than 138,000 visitors came here in 2017, the lowest in years but with a slight increase in traffic in comaprison to 2015. | Many agree the bad condition of the road play an important role to this lack of traffic. Hopefully in 2018 will be better.

The place is really beautifull and interesting, but you (traveller, foreigner, tourist) have to pay 4,5 times more than local people and that drive me crazy! And to make the joke even bigger, that's only for the ruins, if you want to visit the 2...More

The main attraction is the Copan Mayan Ruins of the Classic period (5th to 9th centuries AD) The highlight for me was the Hieroglyphic Stairway which is unlike other Mayan sites. If you haven't seen other sites, then worths visiting. But if you have seen...More

The Copan site flourished from the 5th century to the 9th century AD. The ball court at the site is the second largest in Central America. There are a number of impressive pyramids and stelae. The grounds are well maintained and, surprisingly, there are few...More

I was shell-shocked how amazing these ruins were. Minimal tourists and excellent quality guides that can be hired upon arrival. The tunnels are an absolute must...where you can go underneath the pyramid ruins to see the tombs of the former kings that built the pyramid's...More

Incredible ruins - my daughter and I had the whole site virtually to ourselves - there can't have been more than five other tourists here all afternoon. I know Honduras has a bad reputation which may put visitors off but this area seems very safe...More

The history here is incredible and the ruins are wonderful. Do a little studying so you understand what you're seeing. You need a good day to see it all.

I absolutely loved these ruins. After having seen many others, these were great because there were almost no other tourists. It was quiet there and lots of parrots and other birds to be seen. Can not recommend paying for the tunnels, they are really small...More

Designated as a UNESCO World Heeritage site, this is Honduras' most significant pre-Columbian site and the most elaborate of the Maya cities.

I would say the latest you can go is around 1 pm , because the walk can take a couple hours. After that if going to the museum or the gift shop you must be heading back home since its starting to get dark and more dangerous... More

Hi all. My wife, 3 year old twin daughters, 5 year old daughter and myself will be traveling to Roatan in October. We originally thought to spend 10-14 days in Roatan. We are going for a wedding. We planned to stay at the Clarion in French Harbor with access to Little French Key during the wedding for the first half of the trip. We then planned to move over to West Bay for the next half. Now we are considering using the 2nd half of the trip to go visit Copan Ruinas. The town sounds like it would be a nice place to visit and the ruins would be pretty cool to check out. It would be a way to see more of the country and culture. We would take a 2pm ferry from Roatan to La Ceiba, then get a rental car. I would like to drive straight to Copan Ruinas that day but I don't think we can get there before dark. So we would spend the night in La Ceiba or San Pedro Sula and finish the drive to Copan the next day. For those that have done this before, is that an ok plan?Your thoughts? I've read the road to Copan from San Pedro can be bumpy or confusing. We don't mind a bumpy road. I've also read mixed reviews about San Pedro, but we both grew up in cities and aren't afraid of them as long as we are being smart about our travels. We just want to make sure we are being wise, especially bringing along our 3 daughters. The bus is an idea, but we feel like we have more freedom with a car, and we don't think the girls would be keen on a 8 hour bus ride. We are booked to fly into Roatan but have not planned our route home. In short we would ferry from Roatan to La Ceiba, make the trip to Copan Ruinas, either spending a night in La Ceiba or San Pedro Sula. Spend 3 days in Copan Ruinas, not including travel days, then drive to San Pedro Sula to catch a flight home. We would probably have to spend another night in San Pedro Sula before we fly home. Is the trip with the 3 kids worth it to go see Copan Ruinas, or would you all recommend maximizing our time in Roatan? What are your experiences in making the drive to Copan Ruinas? I know there is also a lot that can be seen just in Roatan as well. We would like to see the culture of Honduras, whether we go to Copan Ruinas or just stay in Roatan. Thanks! Trevor

I second Explorer 1's recommendation to hire a driver. You don't want to be alone anywhere along the road. In Copan, you may want to stay at Hacienda El Jamon on the east side. It is a former working ranch with cabanas and... More
