Great area to stop to see the Hawaiian Sea Turtles. While we were there two turtles came a shore in the cordoned off area. It was a great photo opportunity. We had a lot of fun looking in the crevices in the lava behind the rest rooms and the waves splashing up on the lava was beautiful. Great spot to... More

We stopped here on our way to the Volcano National Park from Kona, but even if you're coming from Hilo I would suggest it's worth a trip, ~30 minutes west of the park entrance. We also went on an extremely windy day. The sand is beautiful and there's a great spot for swimming with sandy access to the ocean, and... More

Punalu'u was one of the nicest black sand beaches we visited. It was enjoyable to play in the waves and watch the sea turtles. Definitely a must see if time permits.

Easy parking... easy access to the beach...as you can see from all the photos, the sand is black with a sparkle to the sand. Absolutely beautiful. Bring a straw mat, my husband and I fell asleep on the beach with the sound of the waves. Additional attraction is the sea turtles, they are cordoned off by rocks or string -... More

Must be what Hawaii was like originally. Beautiful palm trees, interesting black sand, turtles sunning on the beach. Just natural and peaceful, the way things should be

Beautiful black sand, palm trees, and the opportunity to observe or swim with sea turtles. Bring a picnic. Definitely bring a camera. Even if the surf is rough, the turtles come up unto a protected area of the beach to rest. Two were there the entire time, sometimes three. We combined this morning and lunch with an afternoon-evening visit to... More

We stopped here to see a black sand beach. It was a really windy day so, no turtles. There were some colorful ducks. It's neat to see the black sand, fine enough to walk on without shoes. I hear it does get really hot on a sunny day but, it was cloudy when we were there. Not really busy or... More

The beach was a really nice soft black sand and several turtles were there enjoying the waters too! Decent snorkeling but water is a little chilly and brackish. Loved the nene pond!

I think this is definitely worth the trek. The sand is so unique, it's not charcoal, or dirt or even obsidian, but it is very dramatic. The contrast between the blue water, the sand, and foliage is intense. Seeing turtles is bonus points.
