LOL ... No doubt the foregoing comments are true ... but i have driven it twice now and recommend it if you have nerve !

LOL ... I may regret giving this "activity" such a high rating, because the other comments are certainly true. Successfully completing the drive yields a stop at a nice gift shop... read more

I just completed the entire Maui figure 8, starting and ending in Wailuku. I drove highway 340 in a counterclockwise direction, despite the advice of others and boy am I glad I chose the opposite way. To start, as long as you're not driving like a mad man, you shan't worry about the tire edge facing the cliff side. The... More

LOL ... I may regret giving this "activity" such a high rating, because the other comments are certainly true. Successfully completing the drive yields a stop at a nice gift shop where you can get a T-shirt with a cool picture of a guy driving a car with his hair standing on end, his eyes bugging out, and his knuckles... The drive around west Maui is beautiful. While the roads are pretty narrow in places, going clockwise puts you on the inside of the hill if you need to navigate a tight passing situation.

If you are are not comfortable driving on narrow 1 lane roads, with turnouts, have someone else drive. This road is less traveled than the well-known Hana Highway, but it more than makes up for it views and hikes. The conventional wisdom is to traverse this in a clockwise direction from the Lahina side (this will put you against the... More

I re-visited this road since my previous review - this is beautiful but will be scary or even terrifying for most people. This is a unique road with special qualities - possibly too special for many. You do not even need to drive on the scary part to see most of what the north shore of West Maui has to... More

Many of the comments are accurate: scary, dangerous, poorly maintained section of road....definately not a relaxing, comfortable family driving route. However, being up about 1000 feet in elevation the views are breathtaking. Should you decide to go ensure you have a proper vehicle, a camera, and passengers that are trusting of your driving.

We happened upon this route accidentally on our way back to Kapalua from Paia to avoid traffic... We had NO idea what we were in for!! We had a 4 door Jeep Wrangler, if it was anything larger, I'm not sure what would have happened. The one lane road driving up winding roads with sharp hair pin turns in anything... More

I just didn't think this drive was that scary! Ok, so I did come pharmaceutically prepared, having taken a Bonine and a Xanax prior to the trip. My husband drove our rental Jeep Compass the clockwise route, as suggested. Traffic wasn't too bad and we made several stops along the way (Lipoa, Nakalele blowhole, Olivine pools, and Julie's banana bread).... More

Obviously, people who vacation in Hawaii are there to see beautiful scenery. This is NOT the way to do it. I can't stress it enough: Avoid this road at all costs. It was dangerous, poorly maintained, and poorly marked. Please listen: You are not only taking your life in your own hands, but you simply can't control the terrified driver... More

We stayed in Wailea for 4 days and headed to Kahana for six nights and decided to take this scenic/treacherous drive! I say treacherous because this road is a heart pounding, gut wrenching ordeal that would keep most people from attempting this! It is extremely narrow in many spots where only one car at a time can attempt to get... More
