Breathtaking sunrises (if you’re lucky)
Mar 2020 • Couples
I awoke over two hours before sunrise to hopefully capture a nice sunrise at this location I had scoped out earlier along the northeastern shores of Oahu. Lanai Lookout as it is called, is a popular location with limited parking spots (maybe 15-20 ?) off the main road. The state has recently built a solid lava stone fence along the edge of the parking lot in hopes of keeping everyone from exploring down the face of the lookout toward the ocean’s edge. We arrived well before dawn in the pitch dark, long before the State Police got there trying to stop interested photographers from scaling down the lava rock descending down toward the ocean. Although the initial sunrise was nothing to write home about because of the cloud cover, waiting a few more minutes was worth all the effort! WOW!!

View behind the wall: Good. View After the wall: Great
Jan 2020
Notwithstanding the sign that warns people not to go out beyond the wall, we did, as well as a lot of others. During this time, the tide was not high, and we went up to the portion that acts like another safety wall. The view at this safety wall was fantastic, versus the view behind the parking lot wall. There were some who even went down closer to the sea and that was more foolish, IMO. Regarding the fear of break in as reported here by others' reviews, when we got to the parking lot, there was a police cruiser with an officer sitting on the driver side. This gave us a secured feeling that the fear of car burglars is common. This same officer did NOT stop anyone from crossing over the wall. This was my basis to also go past the wall. We were there for something like an hour and the police officer did not do anything from those who went past the wall. I believe he was there to prevent those car burglars from doing there thing, maybe. We left and the officer was still there the whole time.

Cool Spot
Jan 2020
Awesome spot to stop and take pics and enjoy the view. Quite a bit of parking, would recommend checking it out when you're driving along the East Coast.

Read the signs
Jan 2020 • Family
Stopped there today and was amazed that there were at least 3 dozen Asian tourists (including several small children) that were hopping the short wall past the Danger sign and were standing near the edge of drop offs, down by the waterline, and other areas. There’s a reason why the signs are there.

One of my favorite spots on Oahu
Nov 2019 • Couples
Only worth the stop if you’re willing and able to hop over the short wall. If you do, you will be able to enjoy amazing views of the rock formations and the ocean. Fantastic photo opportunities! Gorgeous location.

Look out for the thieves!
Nov 2019
While driving around Oahu last week, we stopped at Lanai Lookout to enjoy the scenery. It was quite beautiful, the seas were a marvelous color, the sound of the surf and the crashing of the waves was impressive. However, as we were enjoying the scenery, standing just in front of our car, someone in the parking lot opened one of the doors and made off with one of our bags. As it happened, this bag contained my wife's wallet, and our family's passports. As this happened on a Friday afternoon, we could not replace our passports until Monday, and book another flight for a few days afterwork. The loss of nearly a week of work, plus the expense of extending our holiday added up to several thousand dollars. When you drive from Kailua toward Honolulu along the coast, you will notice large camps of homeless people. There are large shelters made up of tarps, old cars, and whatever else they can find, and quite a few of these people have taken to stealing from tourists whenever they have a chance. We found a Facebook page about Honolulu thefts, and it receives some 900 posts per week, if that gives you any idea how bad the problem of theft in Oahu is. If you are traveling, keep anything important in a very safe place.

Gorgeous!
May 2019
The sites on Oahu are spectacular.. I didn't want to look away- ruly a magical place. I suggest driving along Kahala Ave around the SE part of the island. Very relaxing, take in all in as you wind back up to the north part pf Oahu.

Great quick roadside photo opp!!
Aug 2019
If you are driving east along the coast and wanting to quickly stretch your legs then this is a great stop. The parking may be full when you first pull up, just wait for a few moments as people are constantly in and out of this parking lot. You will be able to see what the waves have done to the rocks over time and the amazing design on the rocks. If you hop the wall (at your own risk) you can walk down to get a closer look. The rocks if wet and also the sandy parts can be slick so be careful. You will love the designs on the rocks...they are great for photos. To add a little extra to your drive along the coast, I would recommend the Gypsy Driving Guide app which gives you interesting information along the drive. Just download the app and for only $10 it will give you a full tour around the island with history, information and tips on worthwhile stops. It runs on GPS not data so is a great way to learn as you go...who doesn’t want a tour guide right in your own car. This is one of the quick pull outs that is says is worth the quick stop.

Short Stop, Big Payoff
Jul 2019
We (lovely wife, two boys-16/18, me) came in July. We had time between attractions on the windward side so we made our way here. The parking was limited, but people move in and out quickly so be patient. The views were beautiful. You could spend fifteen minutes here or an hour. It's well worth your stop. Recommended.
