The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

This is clearly one of the most panoramic views I have ever seen. It's like a beautiful artist's canvas except this is real and I couldn't get enough of it. In my opinion no camera can capture fully the beauty, the depth of the colors and the layers of different shades of the view from the lookout. I would put... More

Wheeee! As a child, I was told that I might see an upside-down waterfall here. I understand it can happen, but there would have to be just the right light rainshower up against the mountains for the wild winds to cause one. Haven't seen it yet and I'm 74! Nonetheless, the view is indescribably beautiful and the history is fascinating.... More

This was our first stop from Honolulu on our drive around the island and it delivered spectacular views at the elevation of 1168ft. $3 to park the car at the National Park is OK, as the views are terrific. If you are travelling on Pali Highway 61 you can't miss this stop.

Another one of those "must see" trips. The view was absolutely stunning. Wasn't too crowded. $3.00 parking fee, But, it is Hawaii and everything has a price. Feral chickens all over.

I always stop here no matter haow many times I've been to Oahu. The history is fascinating but THE VIEW is the main attraction. Don't miss it. Often a local artisan is sitting at the start selling a local product. We bought beautiful photos. The wild chickens are roaming around too.

Nu'uanu Pali Lookout by the Highway 61 offers spectacular views to the east coast of Oahu. Even if it was sunny in Honolulu it was quite cloudy and windy at the lookout.

Want to blow a first time Hawaii visitor away? Take them to Nu'uanu Pali Lookout! The view is breathtaking and the wind can be too. The views all up and down the windward coast, and of the Ko'olau Mountains are fantastic. And the history here is awesome - Kamehaha won a decisive victory here, sending hundreds of warriors over the... More

First stop after arriving on Oahu driving to our rental house on North Shore. Totally worth it! We were really lucky too some nice people were just pulling out and gave us there parking ticket so we didn't need to pay to park. It literally takes a few minutes to walk back to the overlook. So make sure you stop... More

We stopped here as part of a tour. The views are amazing in every direction. The story of the King throwing the warriors over the side was a bit chilling, but interesting as well.
