About
The Botanical Garden of Algiers, Algeria History of the Garden In 1831, the French colony began undertaking remediation work on the marshlands in order to cultivate agricultural soil. By 1832, Governor General Antoine Avisard signed a decree that established a test garden in a place called El Hamma, east of Algiers. El Hamma provided a perfect plot for the agricultural plans due to its richness in water and cool climate near the sea. The aim of the garden was to serve as both a model farm and a test garden to install, acclimate and study various imported plant species. The garden’s main function in the beginning was diffusing useful plants for medicinal, economic and commercial purposes before scientific and horticultural activities were adopted. The zoological garden was created in 1900, under the initiative of Dr Joseph Ange who was the correspondent of the Paris Museum. By 1837, the garden’s capacity grew from 5 to 18 hectares with an increase

- marcofahmeySao Paulo, SP613 contributionsA huge garden to walk inA refreshing place to relax after a long trip around Algiers. We suggest coming here on the last leg of your day tour in the city. The subway station is right in front of the garden entrance and ticket price was dirt cheap. There were many types of plants and trees. But the fountain was not working when we were there.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 March 2024

There are food options inside and a toilet. The gardens are a little unkept which made it feel like a real national park. Lots of rubbish bins around too. Good value for only 150 dinars.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 1 August 2024

Otherwise a nice space to relax and learn. Requires some more signs in English. From here it also easy access to the Martys Memorial and the Museum of Fine Art.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 August 2024
- stacey Z9 contributionsLovely gardens but the zoo inside makes me sad.Love this place. Such a beautiful day out. The zoo inside is not great and the animals do live in small cages so I do refuse to return there. The gardens themselves are lovely, you can explore for hours. Lovely restaurants and plenty of drinks/ ice cream stands for those hot days.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 August 2024

A nice park, relatively well kept. Crowded as nearly every public place in Algeria, but then again we are talking about a country that spends a lot of its time outdoors. If you are into picnicking, zoos or similar things, this is your place.

Ashamed! Starting with the zoo, as soon as you approach, an indescribable stench. The animals... in pitiful condition, several lions and lionesses in the same small cage... it's simply animal abuse.
For the park, no maintenance, an unparalleled leash... the "French" side is a little maintained with the whistlers in action every 13 seconds because people don't understand that they shouldn't walk on the lawn!
I really don't understand good grades. This is the second time I've been there and nothing has changed.

This garden is really special, but it is also very spacious, you need time. Especially beautiful are the old trees and the different themed corners. A subway stop is right at the entrance. Accordingly, many families also travel on holidays.

Put on your walking shoes for a stroll through this beautiful botanical garden. Bring your camera because this place offers many photo opps. Also, note the young couples in deep conversation parked on benches throughout the garden.. This is a gorgeous, safe place for the engaged and not yet engaged. Call it a date or just a getting to know you chat in person. Also, great place to lose your jetlag and breathe deeply. Dine at Restaurant Traiteur inside the garden.

I enjoyed this park much more than the Notre Dame D'afrique. It's truly a lovely park to wonder around in, enjoying the beautiful old trees and indulging in some people watching. Loved, loved, loved the Dracena avenue.

France conquered Algeria in 1830 and the French promptly built this park in 1832 modelled (in my personal opinion) on Versailles. It is very well kept and has a wide range of different plants and trees as well as a charming little zoo inside. The park is serene and tranquil and very clean and leads you nicely up to the next sight to see - the museum of arts.
PS while you are there pop into the local metro for a ride back t the centre. It is very efficient and spotlessly clean not to mention very, very cheap. It's much nicer than the Paris metro to be honest!

The garden is beautiful and I imagine it's even more so in spring. Great for walking, picnicking and above all people-watching!!! You can see all kinds of people here from small children running around to old lady-friends holding their hands and exchanging latest gossip :-) There is a nice restaurant in the center of the park and couple of refreshment stands. They also run a small ZOO but it's rather depressing. The Musee des Beaux Arts is right across the street from main entrance.
Attention runners: as much as this park could seem ideal for running (it's large and flat) they don't allow it.
