About
Basilica in Algiers overlooking the bay of the capital city. Completed in 1872, this splendid building of neo-bysantine architecture is ornately decorated in the inside in the Spanish-Moorish decor. Unique in its genre, it is probably one of the only churches in the world where the invocation to the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Africa reads "Notre Dame d'Afrique, priez pour nous et pour les musulmans - Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for Muslims". It is dear to the Algerian people who see it as 'their' church. PLEASE NOTE - Appropriate dress required to enter the Basilica

- beetcanner788 contributionsBig Beautiful Catholic BasiicaOpened in 1872 after 14 years of construction. Inside you'll find traditional statues, baptismal font and all the familiar objects of worship. Outside, neo-Byzantine architecture is kind to the eyes. The patio affords beautiful views of Algiers and the Med. Moslem and Christian Algerians come to this place on their day off, pose for pictures, relax, enjoy the view. Nice place to leave the hustle and bustle of a big city behind.Visited October 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 October 2024
- mrc282World9,688 contributionsgreat vantage point over mediterranean seathe grounds are open all the time but the basilica is only open at selected hours 11 am – 12:30 pm, then 3-5:30 pm, daily, except friday 10:30 am – 12:30 pm and 3-6 pm it is free entry the cable car does not directly stop bear the basilica. it is still some distance away so it is better to come by road (bus or rideshare) after visiting, walk downhill to bab el oued and you can catch return to algiers proper.Visited November 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 November 2024
- bluebay06La Spezia, Italy2,692 contributionsA very interesting basilicaLocated on a cliff overlooking the sea of Algiers and from which you can enjoy a beautiful panorama, this Christian Basilica represents, as well as a symbol of devotion, also an attempt to create a bridge between Christianity and Islam. In fact, anyone who visits this church inside cannot fail to notice the writing in French which, translated, says "Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims". Strangely for a Catholic church, photography is not allowed inside. This church can be reached by car and in its area there is a large car park with toilets. A place not to be missed if you visit Algiers.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 December 2024

If you want to visit the cathedral, you can't visit it "just along the way". The cathedral is away from most of Algiers attractions and you must specifically go there for it. But if you make the effort, you'll be rewarded with a great view of the city and the cathedral itself, at least on the outside is no slouch, either. Inside, it's much less so and you can't take pictures of the interior any closer to the altar than from the entrance gate. Just the same, if you have time, you rpoabbaly won't be disappointed.

The location of this church, on a hill towering of Algiers, makes it really stand out. It’s actually quite a small building but nevertheless, a beautiful one, both inside and out. The views from the church grounds of the Bay of Algiers are quite stunning. Entry is free, donations, of course, are welcomed.

Hard trek to the basilica. But beautiful views of port and city certainly make it worthwhile. Lot of families visit with elderly and children. Nice photo exhibition available for free. Can take car but parking is a not nearby (about 500 meters).

I don't understand why his place as number one to visit in Algiers. The basilica is beautiful but without it does not deserve its place. It is very far from the center inaccessible by transport and isolated from everything. Nothing else to do around I was very disappointed by this monument. And I assure you that if you do not see it your trip to Algiers will remain unchanged.

One place in beautiful Algeria
It is amazing. If you like the atmosphere of French Algeria, this is the right place. The sky and the see are dark blue, the trees are dark green, smells fruits and flowers. The atmosphere of Albert Camus's novel, "L'etranger"!

Wow! I'm a well established traveller and it takes a lot to impress me. The location and view was outstanding, the church itself is beautiful inside; calm and peaceful.
Very small gift shop for postcards and relevant books. Definitely recommend a visit if you are in Algiers even for just one day this would be my top recommendation.

What a view from the largest and most historic Catholic Church in North Africa. Be sure to attend An organ event or a singing event in the church. The acoustics are amazing girl. And, little a candelabra and make a small donation, as your sins will be absolved!!!

Not many touristic things to visit in Algiers but the Basilique is surely one of those places to do. Super nice view of Algiers from there, and inside the Basilique is really worth the detour

Do not miss out the opportunity to visit this place if you happen to travel to Algiers. It's a beautiful old place that has been very well preserved and it offers a spectacular sea view and the view of the city as it is located on a cliff overlooking the bay of Algiers!

Bonjour.

Salutations
