- LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,632 contributionsOld Town Area of FesI stayed in a riad in this neighborhood for 3 days and just walked around here. It is much cleaner and more easy to navigate than that of Meknes. There are many things to do and see here: shops selling jewelries, spices, clothings, etc., small restaurants providing cheap and delicious cuisines, visiting medersas/schools and other attractions, etc. Shop owners are kind and helpful. They let you look around, no pressure to buy ( based on my experience here). Recommended to visit and enjoy the ambience.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 11 October 2023

So many cool sights, markets with fruits, clothes, souvenirs, leather goods, etc. The Fes el Bali Medina is incredible! It is a must see and you can’t miss it. I highly recommend for a “real” taste of Morocco!Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 November 2023

A visit to the medina and its many narrow cobbled streets is a must do and I would put it above Marrakech. There are many great places to see and you really get into the heart of Fes and the local culture. The leather production was facinating. The local shop owners are all up for some good haggling so dont be afraid to do so as you can often get prices down by up to 50%. Great plce to visit, would fully recommend.

Fes el-Bali is an amazing place. Once inside you find yourself in a totally different world. This is a mix of "shops", sellers, buyers and everything else you can imagine. Open markets and the life of the whole city. Old world charm. There are goods displayed on the ground, on shelves, in boxes, everywhere. There are shops and then there are shops. But there is also the overwhelming smell of the tanneries. This is a very old part of town and its history goes back hundreds of years. Inside you will also find buildings constructed in the most amazing architectural styles. Absolutely beautiful.

Well worth the smell! This was a wonderful way to purchase leather. The tour they give is delightful. Both our teenagers learned the art of “haggling” and one came home with a lovely leather coat he is still wearing, the other a wallet. Because they were using their own money they were able to get out of the comfort zone and debate the price. Wonderful experience!

Our tour driver took us to see the tannery as one of the must see stops in Fez. It was an interesting shop which had been converted from an old house in the old town and each floor had different displays going up to the roof where you could get a view of the vats. Interesting visit, they seemed to have high quality leather products and they weren't into a hard sell.

Wandering in the alleys of this ancient souk is a must. The artisans are wondrous in their exhibition of their talents, from the last two comb makers from cow bone to the copper makers over their fires and potters at their wheels. The tanneries are the smelliest, most disgusting stench ever but again a must see. Thoroughly enjoyed the hours spent here. Make sure your bags are close to you there are pickpockets everywhere. Remember if you start up a conversation with a seller he won't let up till you buy from him😂

Our guide took us up to one of the viewing balconies which you get to via the inevitable leather shops. They pass you a bushel of fresh mint ti hold to your nose as you view these tannery pits. It’s a hive of activity and with the cool January weather it wasn’t too smelly. But the explainations and shop keepers commentary were amazing. It’s a must. Is it UNESCO heritage site! Just do it!!

Fes El Bali is the ancient walled medina with narrow, car-free streets and ornamented entryways like Bab Guissa and the Blue Gate. The vast 9th-century Karaouiyne University is tiled in vivid painted ceramics, while the towering R’cif Mosque overlooks a lively market square. Souk vendors specialize in perfumes, spices, lamps, and leather, and dining choices range from street kebabs to gourmet restaurants.

We visited the medina on Friday. Many shops closed on Friday ! If you want to shop dont come on Friday. However, there are more shops open near the blue gate. The view of the tanneries from the roof top is amazing. Feels like we were in the 18th century. You can get good quality products with very reasonable price. I wished I had the money

Visited Fez for a 5 day trip. Definitely cheaper than Marrakech. Taxis and food reasonable cost. Bigger variety of Hammam’s. Medina is downhill so be prepared for walk. Tannery is at the bottom of that big hill and nothing special. Overall i would recommend Marrakech but In off season.

Is Riad sahar fes inside the Medina off fes or far away from the medina
Written 24 February 2018
The riad is inside the walls of the Medina, which means it's not accessible by car, if you are staying there, better check if the riad has a pick up service, there is a parking near by, but you have to do some walking to arrive to the riad 😁

which of the following places is good to have shopping in for crafts and leather bags ....etc....Tanger...fes....or Marrakesh?
Written 15 May 2017
I know in fes there are a lot of leather shops. But watch out They dont tell you the prices until after you tell them that you want the goods. And then the price turns out to be outrages high.

Merci
Written 27 November 2016

Hello! How much should you expect to pay for a guide in Fes? Thanks.
Written 14 May 2016
I have just checked with a friend who is an official tour guide for Fes medina and the current set price that all should be charging is 400 DH for a full day (about 5 hours not including lunch) or 250 DH for a half day (3 hours). This is set in law, but there are many faux guides, some of which are just as good , or even better than some of the often seemingly bored official guides. They will charge what they like which may be more or less than the official price, depending on how desperate they are and how good you are at bargaining.
I would opt for the full day myself, as the medina is vast and there is so much to see here.
I have lived in the medina for 11 years myself and it's well worth a day of anybody's life, it's beautiful and amazing.

Hi, Naya.
If you mean what to do in Fes, it's a medieval medina, so is full of interesting ancient monuments and architecture, cafes and restaurants, people carrying out crafts in traditional ways and museums and beautiful sights.
It's great for shopping, both as a tourist or as a local and contains many important religious buildings.
