About
The Photography Museum has opened its doors in the heart of Marrakesh since May 2009. A private collection of 8000 photographs was gathered, this collection is only about Morocco and covers the period 1870 to 1950. The exposition contains hundreds of old photographs and shows the first film recorded in the High-Atlas in color, in 1957 by Daniel Chicault « Landscapes and Faces of the High-Atlas.

- Christine WLondon, United Kingdom57 contributionsDelightfulWe thoroughly enjoyed this delightful small museum of old photos. Really interesting to see old sepia images of the surrounding area, beautifully displayed. The film was also very interesting. Don't miss the rooftop terrace cafe. The views are brilliant and the small menu equally good and very reasonably priced. Your entrance ticket will allow for readmission if you choose to stop by or another visit.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 March 2023
- BBB6 contributionsWell worth a visitI have found some of the tourist spots and tours to be somewhat sanitised. Not so this exhibition of photographs that give a glimpse of Marrakesh from the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century. There are some wonderful photos and some haunting ones. It’s only a few pounds to get in and well worth a visit. There’s a pretty good cafe there too.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 March 2023
- Cosmin M5 contributionsA peaceful well arranged musehm with a great cafe with views of the altlas mountains.Careful! As we walked to the museum we had 3-4 persons randomly telling us the museum is closed and we should not go there. It is only a distraction! They want to divert you to see some leather stores. Museum itself is very nice, a quite oasis in the middle of the chaotic medina. The cafe upstairs offers great view of the Atlas mountains.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 April 2023
- Leanne HBollington, United Kingdom176 contributionsInteresting exhibition, lovely calm terrace cafeThis was a great little place to visit as a change from the souks and the main attractions. A great exhibition of early photos of Marrakesh, Morocco and the Berber people. Really interesting to see how some places have changed and others not at all! There was a regular flow of people but it felt quiet and peaceful. Upstairs on the roof terrace was pretty and shady for a relaxing drink or food, looking over the roof tops of the medina without the hustle and bustle.Visited April 2023Written 23 April 2023
- kam mLeeds, United Kingdom211 contributionsGreat attractionReally interesting photos provide an insight to some of the history of Morocco. The photos are so impressive, the gift shop is full of difficult choices to take home! It’s all housed in a beautiful and cool(ish) building. The cafe at the top is worth a visitVisited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2023
- R_TheReaderRio de Janeiro, RJ522 contributionsHidden black-and-white gem with a great terrasseIn a town where there are many palaces and medersas with an impacting architecture, you may be tempted to skip the Maison de la Photographie. Don't. This is a wonderful little museum where you can get a respite from the crowds for tourist buses, travel to the past though the pictures, and then go up to the terrasse for a great view of the medina (I did not eat there, but it seems to be quite good). Tip: most of the photos mention the city where they were taken, which helps connecting the past and the present if you already visited these places. However, foreigners may not recognize the name Dar Elbeyda - this is the local name for Casablanca.Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 8 July 2023
- victoriamachinExeter, United Kingdom4 contributionsFabulous photo museum and caféThis is one of my favourite places in Marrakech. The photographs are wonderful and so interesting AND there is a fabulous cafe on the rooftop which never seems too busy (unlike other places in Marrakech). Delicious simple food and smoothies. I love it!Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 July 2023
- David BWest Wickham, United Kingdom80 contributionsInteresting specialist museumBecause it shows you a range of photographs from the last 150 years at a high standard/quality of exposure and composition. It also has a decent cafe on the top floor with a view over the roof tops. Interesting placeVisited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 September 2023

We were quite taken by the Jewish section. Some of the portraits are stunning. The early 20th C aerial photo of Marrakech lets you see how the city has evolved outside the souk area. There is a simple cafe on the roof terrace with good views.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 November 2023

An exhibition of photos of old Marrakech, as well as many images of people of all ages and origins throughout Morocco. A handful of the photos in this modest but impressive collection really caught my eye and captured my imagination, and though we only passed about half an hour browsing the collection - not because we were in a hurry, but because there isn't a huge amount to see - it was time well spent.

Stunning photos showing Marrocco from as early as 1880. Not a huge place but good value and nice place to look around even as non photographers. Roof terrace cafe also small but really nice. We didn't get to eat but food looked good.

Had a great visit there last week. All the photos were amazing. Exhibit is on 3 floors and each room has a theme and/or photographer. They accept credit card for the entry fee. The host at reception said they have many more photos in storage and they exchange them. There is a terrace with a small menu on the top floor. The food was excellent. The atmosphere was relaxing after being in the hustle and bustle of the Medina.

The museum is housed in a three story Casbah with a lovely quiet central courtyard, and the most peaceful rooftop café with spectacular views over Marrakesh towards the high atlas mountains.
It was quite a trick walking through the narrow, dusty streets to find the museum, but well worth our effort and the first thing we did when we arrived was to go up to the rooftop café and order a cold drink and rest in the shade and look at The wonderful view. Once we had recovered we went and watched the film about exploring around Marrakesh into the mountains in the 1940s, quite an eye-opener
And then we looked at the photographs taken over the last 150 years or so
fabulous

Great little museum. Some really interesting photography from the 1920’s and 1930’s, which show a glimpse of old Marrakesh. It is worth taking the time for food or a drink on the rooftop, there’s some great views of Marrakesh and out to the mountains.

What have you guys done to stop visiting tourists getting scammed by the tannery mafia waiting outside your doors ?

We just smiled and said we'd check out the tanneries later. A couple of the fellows were quite persistent, but gave up without any trouble once I'd made it clear we weren't going with them. I found that in Marrakech, as smile goes a long way when dealing with people.

Can you buy photos in the UK from the museum - missed the opportunity in Marrakech. Does anyone know if they will send photos in the post?

We visted the museum in March this year and according to the information I received at the entrance, you can order photographies from abroad. I have not purchased any myself, but you can find the available photographies with different motives and different sizes through their boutique. Unfortunately Tripadvisor does not allow including a website, but write boutiquedelamaison and you will find it. Otherwise very difficult.
Best of luck!

Ahmed bonjour,
