While there are many options for guides in Imlil for treks in the High Atlas, I was extremely happy with the choice I made to arrange my trek through Jamal. Henot only runs a reasonably priced and comfortable inn in Ait Souka, through him I was able to arrange at the last minute a trek around the Toubkal circuit!
At around 8:30 pm the night I arrived at his inn, Dar Atlas, I spoke with Jamal about possibilities for treks to Toubkal and the surrounding Berber villages. Within a couple hours we had settled on a 4 day trek departing the next day from Imlil to Refuge du Toubkal (day 1), the refuge to Jbel Toubkal (day 2), crossing a mountain pass and the subsequent descent down to a waterfall and then to the Berber village of Tizi Oussem (day 3), and then finally returning to Imlil (day 4).
And last but certainly not least, I must mention the excellent muleteer/cook and the guide that Jamal selected to accompany me on my trek.
Ibrahim, the guide, was not only exceptionally knowledgeable about the terrain, history and culture of Jebel Toubkal and the Berber people, he was super friendly and engaging, which made the hours spent hiking in the Atlas that much more enjoyable! He also spoke good english which made communication easy.
Muhammad, the gregarious and entertaining cook/muleteer, would seemingly disappear from view for hours and then somehow reappear at our lodging sites with meals of astonishing quality. My experience in the High Atlas would not have been the same without Jamal, Ibrahim and Muhammad, and I look forward to coming back to Morocco some day to go another adventure with them!
