Impressive old Mosque

Has been well looked after. One of the few Mosques in Tunis that is open outside of prayer times, most are closed.

If you visit the Medina, you cannot miss this mosque. Sadly, in Tunisia, unlike Turkey for instance, non-Muslims are not allowed into mosques. Still, you can still have access to the central square and you certainly have to.

With regard to the architecture: the columns are Roman style the arches are Arabic; the minaret is totally unique. Has lots of carvings on the minaret. So impressive. Birds fly through the big spacey courtyard- the place outside the mosque where people can pray there aswell. A must see.

it is an historical building built before the mosque of AL AZHAR in Egypt by around 40 years. it was the most important center in studying religion in the north of Africa. Until now, we celebrate all religious events in this mosque.

Al Zitouns Mosque is a Wonderful Islamic Mosque. It is located in the Old Medina of Tunis, between the small shops selling the traditional products and accessories.

Like most of the mosques in Tunis, foreigners are forbidden to enter a mosque. This policy sometimes changes for a while, but it did not change for me. Thus I could see the mosque outside while walking through el Medina but I was not allowed to go inside. The architecture looks splendid and well preserved.

The mosque is in the heart of the Medina of Tunis. This is a place of prayer and worship for the Muslim people. When you visit, please keep this in mind and show respect for the people there. Women should cover their head and are frowned upon when walking through the main part. However, women can enter and sit in... More
