Bustling marketplace where you can find all sorts of things. Our group used Getahun (getahunannika@gmail.com, +251 93 986 8239), who really enhanced the experience, helping us find things we needed, guiding us throughout winding alleys, etc. Highly recommend - both Merkato and Getahun.

I have been to many places in Ethiopia many times. But, nothing amazes and keep me so alive/alert like Merkato market in Addis Ababa. Super busy, so diverse, many well-dressed pickpockets, noisy, full of different (good and bad) smells in few meters, MERKATO IS NEVER...More

This place is very interesting. Anything that you can imagine buying is here. It’s not like any other market I’ve visited in in the Middle East or Africa. Complete chaos if you don’t know your way around…which is why I recommend not going here unless...More

As a frequent traveler, I alway check out the local markets, a favorite thing of mine to see and experience. I was super excited for Merkato, the largest market in Africa - and was not dissappointed! I usually travel around myself, however *everything* I read...More

I ventured in without a guide and missed a lot of it I'm sure. Massive marketplace. I was told by two locals to be on guard for thieves.

I had a half day layover in Addis Ababa, took the advice of many on this forum, and scheduled a last minute Addis Merkato tour with Yared (What's App: +251 96 372 7196). I definitely recommend visiting it for a few hours and going with...More

Lots of stuff. Department store for the city. Junk recycled, new stuff, old, second-hand, etc. Get guide and be careful.
