Based on the Bradt guide and other people we had met, we weren't expecting that the museum would actually be open. But it was in fact open. Some of the rooms are under renovation and off-limits; but what is in display is in pretty good...More

Great place to find rich cultural heritage of Gabon. We learned a lot from the friendly patron who could speak a little English and managed to get through most of the exhibits.

There is an interesting video showing the different cultural dances of Gabon in which people wear some of the masks and costumes on display. However, all the exhibits just have a label saying what it is e.g. "Religious relic" "Mask from x province" but not...More

Just ridiculous, considering the richness of gabonese culture (let's remember that Fang's art inspired European artists such as Picasso...). You must be lucky enough to find a "special exhibition", otherwise the museum is a display of a bunch of masks and other objects, with no...More

Interesting little museum (don't expect the louvre...) good selection of masks and traditional Gabonese costumes. Almost no explanations on the walls or in the masks (and only in french) so get the guided tour. People complained about the tour guide, the one we got was...More

Very small museum. But interesting to check out. I'd recommend. Very close from city center. Right off the shore. I had very nice guide explaining in English.

We visited the museum by ourselves but it would have been much more meaningful and interesting if we had done it with a guide. Unfortunately, we did not have much time.

Really miserable staff on the door who over charge. Not much going on inside, some interesting masks and statues, but no information about them. I expect you're meant to pay for a tour but I doubt you'll want one of the sour faced women outside...More

It's all a little run-down, but expect to see a lot of local arts and handicrafts. Lot of Gabon masks, local musical instruments and a good way to spend an hour learning a little more about the local culture. Get a guide if you can.

I visited one Saturday afternoon in mid-September and it was completely shut up. All the stalls in the courtyard were empty and the gate was padlocked. I think it might have shut down. The last advertisement on the billboard outside was for an exhibition in...More
