We had 5 weeks in Madagascar and it was the holiday of a lifetime. Manitra came recommended to us and he proved superb. He fully understood exactly what we wanted (we are fit travellers in our 60’s) and he and his team absolutely delivered – we travelled to Masoala, down the Tsiribihina river (by canoe – our choice), to the Tsingy de Bamaraha, to Bello Sur Mer, walked in Ishalo and trekked in Andringitra; the guides (from fluent to fair English-speaking) and hotels he chose for us were all just right and our driver Flo who was with us for 22 days was terrific. We did have a couple of mishaps including a breakdown (with a driver before the brilliant Flo) which Manitra quickly dealt with. We found Manitra extremely responsive from start to finish and it was a joy to finally meet him in Tana. Truly an outstanding individual and team.

Manitra, the owner of Madagascar Endemics, was fantastic! His communication prior to and during the trip was prompt and informative. He responded within 24 hours and was willing to adjust the itinerary to our specific interests.
He also provided references and did an interactive, face to face call, so that we could get to know him better and to answer any inquiries we had at that time.

All the drivers and accommodations were good and his attention to detail is amazing!

The trip started with Manitra meeting me with a friendly hug me at the Antananarivo airport and we immediately set off for Andasibe. A guided night walk was waiting for us and it didn’t disappoint. We saw parsons chameleons, frogs, scorpions, spiders, leaf tailed geckos amongst other things.

The following day, we did a rainforest walk resulted in finding uroplatus fantasticus (a satanic leaf tailed gecko) whose exceptionally camouflaged tail resembles a dry leaf. We also saw a mossy leaf tailed gecko, concealing it self on a a tree trunk. It was difficult to see for the untrained eye. We located further species of green, brown and various other shades of chameleons, many of which were less than 6 inches (15cm) long. The biggest species of Lemur was next on the agenda. The guide diverted down a steep section of foliage and the Indri Lemur was resting in a nearby tree, at a good height for viewing. After taking some photographs and videos, we walked back towards the main Trail and heard three different indri lemur groups, calling to each other. Their calls can be heard from a vast distance and being nearby, it was very loud and exciting to hear these animals communicating.

The third day starts with another walk, a light drizzle and pleasant temperature. Our guide spotted two bamboo lemurs, which were eating bamboo right in front of us. That was a memorable moment, watching the small primates in close proximity. A tree boa was the next animal seen. However, it was not in a tree and it was hiding under some grass. Golden sifaka lemurs were sighted in the canopy and we watched them play and move effortlessly through the trees. The following day I was headed to the mountainous North of Madagascar - Marojejy National Park.

Three days of exploration in the mountains was filled with rain, wildlife, friendship and great memories. Again, various species of frogs, spiders, chameleons, frog eggs, geckos, snakes and wild cat were observed. I especially liked the different species of chameleons that exist with the species, differing depending on elevation. Towards the end of the trek to camp 3, there’s a viewpoint/lookout. Visibility can vary greatly, depending on the weather. It was covered in fog, however the following day, the nearby waterfall and surrounding mountains were visible. I believe that we located about 12 different pieces of chameleon in the three days. The smallest could fit on a bottle cap, and it was approximately 4 cm long. I particularly like a yellow chameleon, which was part of a pair that was spotted on the Trail. We also managed to observe some sifaka lemurs, close to camp 2. A group of five lemurs were eating and swinging from tree to tree. We were satisfied that we located 2 species of Mantella frog, near camp 1 and camp 2. I was thrilled when I realised that when I was taking a photo of a chameleon, which was eating a cricket , and the ‘live photo’ feature on my iPhone managed to capture the tongue-shooting in action. After three days of lots of excitement, it was time to leave.

The final part of the trip involve heading south to Ranomafana National Park. A night walk was our introduction to the wildlife of the area. The first animal encountered was a mouse lemur. Its eyes shone like two golden balls and it was unmistakable. The mouse lemur was on a low branch next to the road . I managed to get quite close, taking a video so close to the lemur that I could have touched it. Shortly after, our guide spotted an elephant-eared chameleon, which, in this locality, has bright blue markings on their legs. I managed to locate a tree frog nearby, and numerous mouse lemurs observed in the nearby trees. On the second day, we saw golden sifaka lemurs, dwarf lemurs and some frogs. During the night walk we located two satanic leaf tailed geckos, mossy leaf tailed geckos, chameleons, a bright green frog. What a trip! It was time to farewell and I appreciate all the dedication and planning done by Manitra. Madagascar Endemics and Resorts is your best option in planning your best Madagascar vacation.

My husband and I booked with Mer Madagascar, and we highly recommend using them. We booked our trip last minute during the summer and were rejected by a couple of global luxury operators (claimed not possible in such a short window), but Manitra at Mer Madagascar was able to organize everything very quickly and with the itinerary and high level of quality/service we were seeking. Manitra is so helpful, caring, and very responsive.

We had a great experience, everything went smoothly, and we felt safe the entire time. The lodging in the areas we stayed was amazing, in beautiful locations, and the food was incredible. It was nice to come back to very comfortable and relaxing settings after a day of activities. Logistics going to/from parts of the country are tricky (have to set your expectations accordingly), but Manitra advised us on the best ways to avoid travel delays and maximize our time there. We had a great English speaking driver, and maybe we were lucky, but we made it on time for everything. We were impressed with our guide in Andasibe, who made it his mission for us to see as much as possible and tracked animals (and insects!) with eagle eyes.

Madagascar is a beautiful country with friendly people and unique flora/fauna. We have so much more to see and would use Mer Madagascar again for another trip to the country.

Madagascar proved a wonderful journey and Mer Madagascar included a number of highlights. The country has amazing fauna, flora, and geology, and fascinating culture and history. Our private trip encompassed 27 days, of which 10 were spent on long grueling roadtrips of 8-12 hours in length. Due to a canceled flight, our itinerary was changed including losing one of the two days at the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park. After such a long road trip (7 days there and back) was a disappointment. Our driver was excellent and had a practiced command of the difficult roads. His English language skills were scant and sharing of information limited. The hotels were generally comfortable and meals often excellent.

My husband and I booked a two week trip to Madagascar through the local tour operator Madagascar Endemics and Resorts. Overall, it was an unforgettable two weeks, and we are already talking about another trip in the future.

The owner, Manitra, did an excellent job discussing our travel preferences in advance and putting together an itinerary that truly delivered on the luxury experience advertised. Our trip was booked at the last minute and over the holidays, too, and still Manitra was quick to respond to our emails and jump on a WhatsApp call to discuss the itinerary or answer questions, even though the difference in time zones usually meant late night calls for him. The most nerve wracking part of the trip was paying in advance via a wire transfer, but Manitra had other good reviews so we crossed our fingers and moved forward, and everything turned out fine.

Better than fine, actually. We loved everything about our trip. The accommodations, service, food, local guides and activities were excellent. We particularly liked our guide in the North, Angelot (he also works for Angel’s Travels, I think). He seamlessly managed the logistics and over-delivered on every activity. For us, that meant things like long hikes into the National Parks to photograph birds and lemurs, and multiple hours spent at a working plantation learning everything about the process of making cacao. When our local flight was changed at the last minute, he even organized a surprise outing with the extra time that perfectly matched our interests. He was always there to answer a question, provide a translation, or join our local guides in pointing out wildlife, but he also gave us plenty of space to take in the experience as a couple.

As an example of the level of quality we received, we met another couple during our trip that was touring with a different company. Their experience with accommodations, food and activities was vastly different than ours. I knew there were less expensive tour options when we booked our trip, but we chose to book with Manitra because he made things so fast and easy. After comparing notes with the other couple, I realized it was well worth paying more for our high-end experience.

If you’re planning a trip, my advice is to list out what you love most about travel (for us, it was wildlife photography, National Parks, local food, etc), and then let the team at Madagascar Endemics plan you an amazing vacation.

My initial plans for Madagascar with MER were cancelled due to COVID, and Manitra of MER allowed the deposit to be transferred to a future trip. Ultimately I went on a 10 day trip visiting two national parks.

The trip went well for the most part but hit a sour note toward the end when, for reasons still not clear to me, Manitra changed a hotel from the agreed upon Mantadia Lodge to Lemurs Lodge in Andasibe. Manitra insisted the two hotels were of the same category which is clearly not the case. I moved from Lemurs Lodge to the originally agreed upon Mantadia against the wishes of Manitra who therefore refused to issue any type of refund or reimbursement.

It appears the Russian guest who wrote the one star review of October 2019 here on Tripadvisor underwent a similar experience and I expect Manitra will post a similar long-winded response to my review, but what happened is pretty straight-forward; the promised hotel was not delivered and a substitute of a similar standard was not offered, nor was there an offer to reimburse the difference in price.

Overall I enjoyed the trip thanks to the company of the great guides and Malagasy people which is why I've rated the experience three stars rather than one.

Greetings for the holiday season from MER Madagascar! Thank you so much for your positive review of our premium services! Our precious goal is to always provide the best possible services to our potential clients! It was a great pleasure to organize a special birding tour (without using any sound equipment) to the very first African American of Nigerian origins! For that particular reason, we made sure to give you a huge discount on your premium tour and that we gave you the best naturalist and bird guides throughout your tour and our CEO/Founder himself met you upon arrival and was in touch with you 24/7 to make sure your tour was running well…And we’re so sorry you resolved to change accommodation in Andasibe at the very last second. We’re sorry you were unhappy with our proposition despite your initial approval of it. Too sad we couldn’t do much to address your request for a refund or reimbursement, but given that all services had been prepaid for your comfort and peace of mind, no refund or reimbursement can be secured for any unused services as mentioned in our Tour Agreement. We’re one of the most flexible tour operators in Madagascar, we invite you to discuss this matter in private, if you wish, as we at MER always endeavor to improve our services so as to properly meet our primarily higher-end clientele’s needs and expectations while in Madagascar.

We had the most amazing honeymoon in Madagascar, all thanks to MER.

We had been recommended a rough route (Nosy Be, Anakao, Isalo, Tana), and Manitra filled in all the gaps and details, meaning that our holiday was a complete breeze when it came to logistics. You have so much more time to enjoy yourself when every detail has been planned in advance - no stressful airport experiences when there is always someone waiting with your name on a sign and a cold bottle of water!

Our guides were fantastic - they never hesitated with our last minute requests to go off the beaten track, yet we always felt very safe (even when we found ourselves in a small hut with a rather eccentric shaman!).

The hotels Mantra organised all put on a special show for us as it was our honeymoon. Mantra really went out of his way to make sure the whole experience was as personal as possible. For this we will be forever grateful as we have so many incredible memories.

The pre-trip information was very useful and efficient. In fact, when I had difficulty booking the local airline Mantra stepped in and organised everything for us and simply added it to the bill with no extra cost - he even made sure we got the our preferred seats!

Madagascar is an absolutely incredible country, but you really do need local help to get around. There is no need to look any further than MER: this really is a one of kind outfit and I couldn't be more confident in recommending Mantra and his team.

Can't wait to book our next trip: its incredible how much there is to see!

Dear Katie, Thank you ever so much for your detailed and very positive review of your recent honeymoon tour in Madagascar! We’re so thankful to you for appreciating our tour services overall, which means a lot for us at MER. How excited we were to have UK honeymooners in the Treasure Island and to know you’re a close relative of our favorite British award-winning travel writer, and a good friend of ours, John Gimlette! We’re enjoying reading his fascinating book about Madagascar: “The Gardens of Mars: Madagascar, an Island Story”. Thank you very much for the copy you gave us! Once again, congratulations to your amazing husband, Guy, and you, Katie, on your wedding! We look forward to your return trip to discover other gorgeous parts of the great island.
