Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a beautifully laid-out shrine area for the priest who is considered to be Mauritius’s own saint. (He has been beatified but not yet canonised, in 2024). The story of Pere Laval is told movingly in a small museum which has exhibits such as his original doctoral thesis from when he studied medicine in Paris, letters he wrote from his work in Mauritius, and even an ornate pair of curtains which he had turned into a decoration for the church when he left his medical practice and became a priest. He lies in a coffin in the shrine area surrounded by plaques which are voted of thanks from Mauritians over the years for graces obtained, and there is a moving photo of Pope St John Paul II kneeling in front of his coffin - one saint visiting the shrine of another. The modern church is peaceful and beautiful. This priest gave his all for the people of Mauritius and a visit to his shrine is a moving and uplifting experience.

It is a beautiful place, recently renovated and enlarged, where Father Laval is exposed. We lighted a candle. Outside the shrine, there are signs tracing his history. A museum at the back is dedicated to Father Laval where we bought souvenirs. The church is very large, with mosaics on its walls. A rather modern architecture.

If you are of the Catholic faith then the visit to his shrine will be a good experience. Father Laval is credited with performing many miracles. The church located close nearby also allows for some quiet solitude and reflection. There is lot’s of information at the shrine about the work of Father Laval and also the visit by the Pope. Even if you are not of the Catholic faith it’s still and interesting place to visit and reflect.

Looking at the wax replica of the great man in ist glass coffin might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the special atmosphere and the outstanding personality of Father Laval are quite attractive. During the fisrt week and up to 9th of September you only want to visit the shrine if you like to be surrounded by huge crowds, as Pere Laval day (on 9.9.) attracts pilgrims from not only Mauritius but all over the Catholic world.

I visited the holy grave as i was passing nearby. All religions are welcomed to enter freely and pray peacefully. Father Laval is famous for his miracles especially for the sick. The Sainte Croix church is nearby. The place is well maintained. Each year on 09 September the place is crowded with pilgrims who walk to seek blessings. It is a ten minutes drive from the capital city of port louis towards the north.

Pere Laval is the patron saint of Mauritius. Every time I come here it is different but it feels like coming home. It's a great place to visit and learn about the island's history. I personally come here to give thanks - I was born in Mauritius and left when I was 1 year old.

Father Laval is admired, sanctified, prayed to and is the local God. The church has lovely stained glass windows but the mausoleum itself is a bit gloomy.
