Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

1901 is proudly written above the main gate at the entrance of the Mercado Municipal. It shows the Portugese rulers at the time were serious about turning Lourenco Marques into an urban center of significance. The architecture is robust. Solid materials were used for the construction.
Nowadays it is one of the many local bazars in Maputo. Fresh fruit and vegetables are the main produce on offer, but fish, herbs and spices, household goods, wigs and other items are also for sale.
Very good to get an idea of local life.

The main entrance is through a large gate on which “Municipalidade de 1901” is written. As soon as you enter what attracts, like all tropical markets, are the colors of the fruit and the goods of all types stacked on the stands behind which the sellers observe you to understand if you are a tourist there just for photos or if you intend to buy something. We bought some very good fruit and, although we didn't stay long, we weren't bothered by anyone. Nothing special but it is worth placing it in the tour of the city.

Our central market is very busy but not on a Sunday. Its a market and you will find many items from food to beauty treatments. Those women who like hair extensions they will find it too but be careful to buy fake hair and do negotiate the price. be aware that all sellers will call you to buy, just politely say no. This market is historical and was refurbished.

The market has fresh veggies, fruits, etc. if you're a foreigner then there is few things you may want to observe:
1. When buying in kilos, their weight scales are manuals and are "played" in a way to give you less then a kilo in products while it shows as 1 kg as results (fake results). If you have your own scale, this would help.
2. You need to bargain (few things are fixed rates) you will know how to spot this once you roam around
3. Do not speak on your mobile when you are out from market, you may be robbed. Same for golden necklace, etc.
However this is good place to visit and buy things. My intention is solely to help you have positive experience from our country. Above shared tricks were just to raise your awareness levels when you visit the market. It's safe otherwise. I m local and I am alert when I take my mother for shopping. Hope you enjoy.

Mozambique is a combination of corruption, lawlessness, incredible inequity and easy access to guns through neighboring south Africa!! The police forces is at best, absolutely useless and at worst highly corrupted!
From the minute you step in, you are s target for being conned by “criminals” on all scales. Nothing – and I mean nothing – works in this country. If you need the most basic medical services, you should hit the road to south Africa or you risk exposure to all kind of different viruses and/or wrong decision and diagnosis by so called medical experts.
Car hijacking, gun points are just normal day to day business. The law enforcement officials “The Police” stop you on the streets asking for money and taking away your IDs / documentation in exchange for money!
And it is all to be very well expected, as the average gross income is around $100 per month, were the middle class Mozambican drive their fancy cars and live in colonial mansion like houses.
After independence, a series of ex-Portuguese houses were confiscated by the government and later on “privatized” to those who had connections to the party in power, and now they are renting them to foreigners at outrageous rates! A monthly rental fee of $6000 is an average housing rate!
In short, if you want to avoid spending thousands of Dollars yet having a very bad and bitter experience on your vacation, avoid Mozambique!

This market has always been on the visitors list to visit but it is little more than fresh produce for local shopping and has a surprisingly large number of stall selling hair. I don't know how many people travel to Maputo for a weave but if you are looking for hair, this market appears to be the place these days.
On the other side of the road ( which road ?) we were directed to a material shop which has a well stocked range of the printed patterns that are so popular as wraps and we spent more time there than in the market.

We were travelling from Bilene to Maputo on our way back to South Africa.I must say...the driving in Maputo is on another level.even driving in Johanesdburg isn't that hectic but oh well we made it alive and safe.we drove down to the marked where everyone wana sell you anything and everything.we ended up settling to buy some nice hair picked and fabrics there because they are so cheap..we didn't experience anything bad not even mugging.when we came back where we parked the car it was still there and safe.at the market you find everything from food to clothes and shoes and even clothing material .the only thing a person needs to do is make sure that they don't sell you fake staff at a high rate or even over charge you.they also take Rands

Maputo local market is quite a place for a food and wine lover like me. The colors, smells and tastes combined with the haggling and bustling movement on a busy morning are one of my favorite moments in a foreign city. Maputo's market is very well laid to wall around and safe. I bought some fruits (bananas and mangos) for the day and a ton of cashew nuts that are simply the best in the world!
