Its a fortress were all the things are very well maintained. Inside there some expositions and offices and also some old weapons from the Portuguese times! The views from the top is amazing! It worth a visit if you are staying in Maputo!

For nearly three centuries this fortress has witnessed Mozambique's history! Its construction started back in 1721 and, over the centuries, it has been conquered, destroyed and reconstructed, again and again. Its privileged location, on the commercial route to the West Indies, brought armies and greedy pirates, both eager to conquer this important position. Dutchmen, Englishmen, Austrians, Frenchmen, Portugueses ... all were here. In 1946, the actual fortress - most commonly known as "Fortaleza de Maputo" - was rebuilt at its very primitive site, becoming a military museum. After Mozambique's Independence, it passed to the administration of "Universidade Eduardo Mondlane", responsible to maintain this important landmark of its history, as well as its collections. The visit does not take long and don't miss, at the inner patio, the equestrian statue (4,9m high) of "Joaquim Mouzinho de Albuquerque", the Portuguese officer who arrested the last Emperor of Gaza (Mozambique), Ngungunhane, and pacified the Province. Ironically, the coffin with Ngungunhane's remains is also deposited at the fortress (in the former chapel). A lot of history! Enjoy!

A small fortress rightly placed in the old city centre next to Mercado do Pau. A place of culture, history, and of peace now. Weaponry Statues of great historical value are displayed. More reading about the pieces displayed would be great.

A lot of cannons of different sizes, ship anchors, and historical photos. A pleasant surprise in downtown Maputo.

Maputo Fortress, also known as Fortress of Our Lady of Conception, is a national historical monument related to the history of the Portuguese presence in Mozambique and the relations and resistance offered by the locals. The history of Maputo Fortress dates back to the late 18th century when the first Portuguese fortification at the bay began, in a context of commercial rivalry between Austrians, Dutch, French and English, who wanted to widen their influence in the area. In the 1940s and 1950s the fortress was rebuilt and valued, and a museum was set up that operated until after independence. Nowadays Fortaleza is a space of interpretation of the history of the occupation and of resistance, having its spaces adapted to receive exhibitions and events of artistic performance and of entertainment.

Walls and rooms are well maintained so it's fun to be inside the fort and climb up to the parapets, and see the cannons. Much more could be made of the side rooms in the way of historical exhibits.
On entrance we were asked for donation for a ticket. We gave 100 MTN for the five of us and they seemed very happy. Didn't receive a ticket. Hope the donation made it's way to something useful.

Useful history lessons to be learned at Fortaleza. The central area is dotted with fragrant frangipani trees and there is an idiosyncratic collection of colonial statuary, shell casings and other relics that offer much insight into Mozambican history. Be sure to go into the perimeter galleries, where there is a mix of contemporary art, monuments and even a gravesite.

This is probably the most visited tourist spot in Maputo. If you go on a Sunday there is a flea market right in front. There is no charge to go in, but you can make a donation for the upkeep of the fort. Nice to visit

As visitors to Mozambique, we were delighted by some of the Iberian influences the locals display. They take a siesta, sometimes even sleeping under trees in the park. They drink coffee and speak good Portuguese. This does not mean, however, that the former colonial overlords are well-regarded. Quite the opposite. Independence was won only by a long, bitter bush war and when the Portuguese did withdraw, they did so hurriedly, flinging the country into chaos.

It is not surprising then that the main Portuguese fort in Maputo is not exactly revered by the locals. Rather it has been very neglected over the years and is now looking quite old and time-worn. In addition, the interior of the fort boasts a large bas relief which celebrates the chief who led resistance against the imperialists in the Maputo area. Yet for the history buff, this only adds to the interest of this place and we would recommend a leisurely visit.

I visit Fortaleza of Maputo as a Tourist and as an Event Producer. As a tourist i can say that is a must go spot in Maputo. You learn a lot of Mozambican History during the tribes era and mostly you have the tomb of the king of kings of the tribes. Also you can see how was built one of the most important forts of the colonial times among other amazing things and details.
As a producer, I worked in several events inside and from the team to the overall final look, everything was amazing and possible.
To repeat again.
