If you expect something special driving from Walvis bay towards Sousvlei - you will be dissatisfied. Most of the distance you drive on gravel/sand road. Every car brings a cloud of dust that you can hardly see through. The driving ought to take all your concentration because the condition of the road. If you are used to slippery road it... More

I rented a small aircraft and flew over the desert, I could see lots of seals and flamingos. I also saw two old boats in the desert, because of the movement of the dunes

sossusvlei is without any doubt the most wonderful place to visit in namibia. we were as early as possible there. the first hours there was a low fog. that gave the valley an almost magical atmosphere in which a serene silence prevailed. after a few hours disappeared fog and clouds in less than half an hour. from the 'big daddy'... We spent the new year eva and the first day of 2016 in Sossusvlei. The view inside Sossusvlei was extremely impressive, especially in the morning when the sun made the shadow on the dunes. We climbed us Dune 45 at around 5 pm, it was not hot but quite windy, when we went to the top, it seemed like the... More

This was the highlight of our visit to Namibia. We took a 4 x 4 tour of the desert with a guide. We visited Dune 7, the moonscape, and local vegetation. There are spectacular views and places to stop and meditate on the world. Picnic out in the dessert under a tree. Its a great place to be a tourist and... More

I travelled regularly to Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert which is 4 to 5 hours drive from Windhoek. When I lived there there was no hotel, only a campsite, which still exists as far as I know. Pls check this out on the internet before you drive there.

My wife and I did a 12 day self-drive in Namibia in October. Probably about 80% of the nearly 3,000km we drove was traversing the Namib Desert. Our journey (predominately on well-defined gravel roads) took us over long, gun-barrel straight, flat stretches, through mountain passes and into scattered rocky outcrops. The red dunes of Sossuvlei (we also did a balloon... More
