Africa's highest statue, it was unveiled in 2010 to commemorate Senegal's 50 years of independence from France. At 49m in height, it is taller than New York City's Statue of Liberty and Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer.
The monument symbolizes the rebirth of Africa.

If ever in Dakar, you have to visit this place. The African Renaissance Monument (French: Monument de la Renaissance Africaine) is a 52 m (171 ft) tall copper statue located on top of one of the twin hills known as Collines des Mamelles, outside Dakar, Senegal. Built overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in the Ouakam suburb, the statue was designed by the Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby after an idea presented by president Abdoulaye Wade and built by Mansudae Overseas Projects, a company from North Korea.[1]

This was on the tour itinerary when visiting Dakar. The sculpture is certainly very big and impressive, however it does lack same warmth and feeling which is very surprising for Africa. It reminded me of Cold War Soviet style propaganda monuments rather than something as important and moving as African freedom. But still worth a visit.

Amazing monument just breathtaking!!! Take your time on the steps and enjoy! Great photo opportunities of the city from the top. Unfortunately went in Sunday so couldn’t go inside. If you’re looking for a local English speaking guide then I highly recommend Malick his card is in the photos or what’s app +221773651716. He speaks English, French, German and Spanish!!! Pick up from all hotels ( Riu, Saly, Dakar)

I love everything about Le Monument. The hike, the views of the city, the musuem and history, the scenery, the history of the family of the statue.

I loved being at that height and knowing that you were inside the heads of the statues.

It is another Spinnaker Tower of Portsmouth, England.

My favorite part was the incredible structure of this monument. I felt so little and big at the same time. I did not go inside nor climb all the stairs due to the short time frame I had but this was one of the best things I have experienced in Dakar,Senegal. Thanking the photographer, Sarr Adiouma, who made such beautiful pictures also. Big thumbs up.

It's a spectacular sight that dominates the area around Les Almedies. The admission price includes the guided tour. The views from the statues of Dakar are truly amazing. It was wonderful to see a recognition of both Rosa Parks and the Reverend Jesse Jackson.

I loved the sight from afar. I climbed the stairs to the foot of the monument and paid for the tour to the museum and the view from the top.
It was an exciting tour, which would have been better if the tour guide could speak English

My wife and myself are currently holidaying in Senegal for the first time since we had lived in Dakar in the early/mid 80s.

Certainly one thing that didn’t dominate Dakar’s skyline during our time there was Le Monument de La Renaissance Africaine - difficult to miss positioned on the top of a hill and - at 52 metres - the tallest in Africa!

It is accessible by walking up some 200 (steep) steps so not for the feint hearted but well worth it as on reaching the top one is rewarded by panoramic views. The Monument itself is impressive up close but some of the surrounding infrastructure (notably the toilets) is not well maintained. Hopefully, a temporary situation as it does take the gloss off an otherwise quality attraction.

We visited the African monument as part of a tour. The monument is massive and provides a good view of Dakar. Our tour only stopped here for 20mins, so didn’t have enough time to climb up the top of the man’s head.
