The Uganda martyrs shrines provides a good background on how politics and church were intertwined in the early years. The fears faced by the rulers in place at that time in the face of a new power in the name of the church. It was amazing to see the bus loads of visitors from the surrounding countries. During my visit there were 8 weddings going on - I guess it is a popular site for that too!!!

Very important to get a guide when touring this site. Many details will be missed otherwise. A significant step on your trip to Uganda. Expect to be a part of over 4 million visitors to the shrine on June 3. It will be a memorable pilgramage.

Uganda Martyrs shrine is visited by people with different reasons. Some use the water that flows near the shrine to solve their problems. Others pray and their prayers are answered. You need to visit it and find out for your self

You don't have to be religious to appreciate the history behind the story of the Namugongo Martyrs. I highly recommend visiting the shrine, which has just had a makeover in time for the arrival of Pope Francis.
In a country where there is little interesting architecture, Uganda Martyrs Shrine really stands out. This very modern-looking structure is based on the traditional shape of a hut. There are some beautiful engravings on the wooden doors and some fabulous stained-glass. Take time to look at each individual stained-glass window; each one records the personal details of one of the martyrs. In addition, there are some beautiful paintings inside the shrine.
Probably best to visit outside the popular pilgrimage times of the 1st week of June, when the area is set upon by 1 million pilgrims, from Uganda and East Africa.

We were not sure what to expect at this site. Our hotel (Kampala Serena) recommended it, we had time to spare and so we visited it. Our guide appeared to be knowledgeable on the general regal and religious history of Uganda in the late 1800's and early 1900's, as well as the stories of key individuals such as the King's official wrestler. The shrine itself was built in the late 1960's on the site where Catholic and Protestant Christians were martyred in 1886. The large and numerous timber doors of the shrine are carved with motives telling the story of the events. Various metal constructs around the site depict the beatings and burnings of the martyr's. We found it interesting and the stories tied in well to those told during our visit to the King's Tombs later in the day.
The grounds and lake are extensive and millions of pilgrims from all over Africa visit this culturally significant site for the special activities Ugandan Martyr's Day 3rd June.

Intense, eye-opening and thoroughly overwhelming shrine. The tours are well presented, though a bit too gruesome at timesdue tohe violence inflicted on Christians. Worth the visit if you're interested in the value and meaning of Christianity to Uganda.

I am sure its not the first church you will visit. They are proud of the popes visits in the past (again, not so special), however the attraction is the different architecture. Use of wood in layers at the dome is very nice.
Another is the garden, with the artificial channels in its sides.
Worth a visit, but really, dont feel bad if you miss it.
