The Bhutan Royal Botanical Garden was for me just a so-so visit, because it just seems to be lacking what I would expect from a "Botanical Garden". After visiting botanical gardens in other countries (i.e., Japan, China, Europe, etc.), the Bhutan Gardens just does not compare - in my opinion.
Be that as it may, the visit to the Bhutan Gardens is still an OK visit along the way from Thimphu to Punakha - keeping in mind that this is a local experience.

Not too much of plant variety out here, the place offers good view and allows you to spend some quality time with the family

There is a canteen inside and the lady was courteous enough to cook us very good vegetarian noodles (though the actual noodles did not have a veg taste maker), she added her own spices and came up with a very good veg noodles.

Dont miss the view point to the far end of the garden.

It is a very quite and peaceful place with lots of nice garden. It is worth spending about an hour here even though the garden is still being developed.

The sandflies are poisonous and after they bite the sambars they become worse. I was bit and ended up having to go to a local clinique. Also, the garden is not beautiful enough to worth the bite.

For me the main attraction of Kandy other than just roaming the city. Nicely designed and lots of shade, beautiful botanics everywhere you look. Go to the pond also and experience the monkeys bathing

Nothing at all to see. The signs and the map is misleading. there were no orchids, no flowers of any kind. No sign of any attraction. The lake was shallow and dirty. Total waste of time and money. Highly avoidable.

Went through this one on the way from timphu to Punakha. Didn't at all seem like anything beyond a dry jungle. Avoid.

The Royal Botanical Garden is just 15 minutes drive from the Thimphu city. Has a good variety of plant and tree species. A walk in the garden is lovely and spring would be awesome.

A view point is located towards the far end and there is a footpath to walk around. You can easily spend about an hour walking around this beautiful and peaceful place. It is mostly visited by Thimphu residents on weekends. A lovely place especially for young children.

It opens at 9 am and closes at 5 pm during summer and 4 pm during winter. International visitors pay 50 Bhutanese Ngultrum (less than one US$) as entry fee. A great value for money!

Although the plants are not named, this does not detract from their beauty - it is all the more charming for this. One of the rangers came and spoke to our group and she had a great deal of knowledge about the plants and animals. We watched a video afterwards. It would be interesting to see the gardens in another season.
