After the earthquake a lot of the temple area has been destroyed. Overall many efforts are made to save what is salvagable. I strongly recommend to use a guide, as you will visit areas which are not seen when going around alone.

What a cool place! Lovely stupa, buzzy atmosphere and lots and lots of monkeys.....what's not to like? As some people have said there is still some rebuilding going on, but the site is well worth a visit...

Monkey temple is the nickname for Swayambhu. There is much more to this temple than just the stupa at the top of the hill. You can reach this temple by foot if that's your preferred mode of transport, but it is also cheap and easy to catch a taxi, especially since once you get there, there are several steep steps... As is everywhere in Kathmandu. What they are all going through, the conditions they are living in...pulls the heart strings...this is a must to visit cannot be missed and worth every minute you are there.

On our visit there was still a lot of rebuilding going on. But there still is a lot to recommend in this Buddhist Temple. Lots of monkeys and stupas. Make sure you allow enough time to slowly wander around to take it all in.

This is one of my "power spots" in the world. It is possible to climb the many stairs to get to the top of the Monkey Temple, or you can take a taxi around the back and it is a much easier climb.
