BUT......I was pleasantly surprised. The grounds. .....unkempt, the building. ....not kept up, the cabinets, .....19th century. ....
The collection of butterflies, moths(sp) insects and bugs was fantastic. If you are a nerd and a science freak, then by all means go there. We spent an hour, but I am going back.

This mseum is situated in the premises of P.N. campus. Generally we think mueums are in bigger buildings, spread in huge but this museum is in a small house. It is established and conducted under Annapurna conservation project. As clear by its name it has very goo collections of buterflies found in pokhara and surounding hilly/mountain areas. Butterflies are kept preserved in drawers/boxes with english/ local names and scientific nomanclature.
drawings, idols and few preserved forms of animals and birds are alsoin the museum. It also has miniatures of traditional houses of Pokhara valley. You can see statues of various ethinic groups in their traditional attires on the pillars at the entrance. Attempts and efforts for nature conservation made by ACAP can be seen here. This museum is inside the compound of P.N. campus so less known. Hence, not many tourist visit it but once you get inside I am sure you will not regret. You can visit this place on the way to Mahendra cave from your hotel or vice versa and it is free of cost.

I visited this museum after nearly 20 years and It still free to visit!!
It's well maintained and is very informative.
The butterfly collection is the gem of this museum.
You can spend whole day looking at different types of butterflies found in Nepal.
Hats off to Mr Colin Smith (aka Mr Butterfly and Butterfly Baje in Nepali) who dedicated his life to collect and preserve these butterflies.

Not sure why this is classified as just the butterfly museum, it is the Annapurna Natural History Museum. We arrived by public transport from the lakeside, walked around the area a bit and then the university grounds before going into the museum. I totally dug it - this is like a Portlandia skit, but in a really good way. The paintings, murals, taxidermy, is all so kitsch. The butterfly area is obviously a passion project. Unfortunately there was no English-speaking staff around, but we still learned a lot from reading. In my opinion, this is a great little adventure in Pokhara, really happy we went and surprised this doesn't get more traction with visitors!

A "not so easy to find" but "worth a trip" kind of museum, set on the university ground, with colorfull animal sculptures along the wall, and passionate employees. A tiny museum with an very unusual atmosphere, like being invited in some nature enthusiast scientist for a private tour of its collection. Hard to describe but definitely worth a visit. When done, you can walk the short distance across the university ground toward the cliffs above the river for a look.

Located inside the biggest university of the city. There is a large cooection of butterflies and also other insects. They are well preserved, unlike so many other artifacts in Pokhara Regional Museum!

Presentation of the butterflies and other insects is well done. The rooms are a bit dark but you can turn on the lights if there is power. Nice short stop good for kids

Situated on thePN campus, pretty far from Lakeside, the so called butterfly museum actually is a room inside the Annapurna Natural History museum. The entrance is free. It is small but colorful and the butterfly collection is impressive. They apparently host almost all of the 660 different species living in Nepal, plus some foreign ones. It was fast to visit but very informative. I liked it.

Annapurna Butterfly Museum is a house of butterflies. It is not famous as it should have been. Situated outside main city.
