Eternal Golden Fort is a well preserved example of Chinese fortifications of the Qing Dynasty. It thick reinforced earth walls mounted with various sized cannon in the ramparts give a real feel of security. The moat which today provides a picturesque backdrop for photos just adds to it attraction.

As of typical of majority historical site in Taiwan this one is just as bad. This site has rich history and is one of the most historical buildings in Taiwan but the site is not well kept. The preservation is well below world standards. Refurbishment is sub standard and does not pay any homage or sympathetic to it's environment nor... More

As the Tainan City Bus to Anping district stops here, I thought I should not give this place a miss. The adult ticket costs only 50 NTD (students and elderly get 50% off at 25 NTD!) and you can take pictures at the grand entrance and with the massive cannons. On weekends, the locals are there to give you a... More

The name of this place may sounds exotic, but in reality it's just a fancy name for an old fortress built in the late Qing Dynasty (c. 1870's). The castle gate is an arched opening accessed by a bridge which in those days, could be lifted up in case of enemy assault. But the castle as such has lost its... More

Its an old fort that is surrounded with a moat. We saw some paddle boats for rent, but the scenery around was not that exciting. I was hoping for a museum inside the fort that housed items related to the fort but there was none. There are still a lot of cannons in the area. They fired one of the... More

Just some cannons surrounding an old fort. When I was there they fired one ofbthe cannons which was pretty cool but this place is not worth getting of the track for.

I kind of went on a bit of a wander throughout the city and ended up here. It's pretty out of the way from everything and not necessarily worth the trip however if you are interested in old forts it's kind of interesting.

The outside gate in the picture above is probably the most interesting part of the castle. The show of the guards shooting the canon is kind of hoaky. Definitely not a must see attraction.

I love Tainan, spacious and many buildings with historical value still stand within the city. It's a place with culture and full of nice people. Eternal Castle has a river surround it, as it was a bastion created in the past for military purpose, you can still see a few large cannons inside. The open square in the middle was... More

I came here with my friends, hoping that we able to learn Taiwan history and beautiful surroundings. But, we were disappointed. Basically, it's just a training camp. That's it. There's no explanation or whatever.

Staying in Anping District/ Annan District

Neighbourhood Profile
Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history. The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.
