In order to appreciate Wongwian Yai area, visitor must understand that 60 years ago Bangkok Metropolitan was divided into two cities, Bangkok and Thonburi. The only bridge connecting the two cities was Sapan Phut that ran from the present Flower Market (Pak Klong Talad) to Wongwian Yai which was the center of Thonburi. Now visiting Wongwian Yai is to see the life style and markets of another community. Presently Bangkok Metropolitan is connected by several bridges, and the BTS. Hence without the knowledge of the above facts will rob the visitor the understanding of the area importance.

Spent 8 weeks in this area December 10/January this year. Love it the people are so friendly & I regard it has my 2nd home.

The western side of the river in Bangkok is non touristy but there is some great shopping complexes & is very much untapped. Once the S end of the Skytrain beyond Wongwian Yai opens I'm sure the tourists will see for them selves what a great area of the city the western side of the river is.

From the skytrain station at Thanon Krung Thonburi turn right onto Phra Chao Tak take a look at the old Wongwian Yai train station. Catch one of these comfortable but slow trains to the journeys end one hour to the south west of Bangkok.
The trains go every hour cost about 15B locals go free. The end of the line is a delightful fishing market town of Mahachai near Samut Sakhon. Some great photos can be taken en route on the one hour journey of run down shanty houses the real Thailand!. Mahachai must be a good 40K from Bangkok & is a very Thai market town with many stalls selling cloth clothes fruit veg fish etc

In the Wongwian Yai area there is a good economy hotel Loft Inn although I have never stopped here. The King Taksin monument roundabout has some great markety stalls & shops. A delightful bakery where a lovely white sliced loaf for 15B can be bought. Also some tasty buns and cakes all much cheaper than if you buy in the Silom/Sukhanvit area. The stall sellers and shop holders are so friendly. Despite not speaking english and me not speaking Thai we get along just fine
Because I appear to be the only farang amongst all these real Thai people I get a lot of attention & everyone is so friendly.

Over the years, the Wongwian Yai area has been dumped on by Bangkokians as both crowded (it used to be, but not as much now that BTS goes there) and nothing special (they're right in a strictly entertainment.monument/destination sense), but I am happy that both those impressions persist, because the place is a wonderful glimpse of normal Bangkok city life, and also a place to shop for authentic food stuffs, ordinary household goods us tourists would find fascinating (hand tools, cooking implements, hardware stores, etc.) and small family restaurants that are nearly uniformly good. There is a growing list of modest and good hotels there, and it makes a great base for a long-term business assignment in BKK. You can walk safely at any time (true for the whole of BKK, but I'd let my wife walk there at 3:00am without worry). The people are friendly in a classic Thai sense, but also because they do not see so many Falang there as elsewhere in the city. It is easy to join in the local friendly atmosphere, and you'll feel it is like a home away from home quickly. One of my favorite neighborhoods in BKK.

Take your time and stroll through the local fresh market which is very interesting to see. Continue to the train station and watch the people how they enter and exit the train, after a look on the statue in the middle of the big roundabout you could visit e.g. the Princess Mother Memorial Park in the north next to the river.

A stroll around the roundabout is a great glimpse of Thai life in Bangkok for those of us foreigners who see mostly tourist traps. The food markets are amazing to see and if you take the time to look, great Little food stalls, take home bakeries and coffee shops to try out. Our hotel (Bangkok Loft Inn) was right around the corner so great for a walk and the park in the middle is a lovely quiet view of a bustling city. No shade though so can't stay long there in the heat of the day. Not a lot to do in the tourist sense but a great way to see a local side of Bangkok for a hour or two.

The area is very nice residential area. In the daytime, busy with lots of street food stalls and a big, good fresh produce market. (Try the food there - so good! Some of the stalls even have english menus if you do not know your food thai yet!) Nice small alleys between the bigger roads, very friendly people, lots of children greeting you as you pass by. In the evenings, the area is very quiet. There is a very famous sea food restaurant at the Charoen Rat Soi 1, on the street. We queued an hour to get our prawns but it was worth it! Easy access by BTS. If you do enjoy more sights like local market place with its street food stalls, lazy alley cats and grannies taking care of grandchildren than statues, museums and wats, this is the place to visit! We stayed here 3 days and liked it a lot!

Make the effort to see this area. A real authentic Thai area devoid of all the tourist traps. See and be part of real Thai living, plenty to see and do. Take the metro and walk.

This area of Thonburi, is well served by both BTS and excellent bus routes, leading to all parts of the City. There is a very large market, which starts at 2 am. There are a few hotels, though sparse, and little in the way of major shops, around the main Square, which carries an impressive statue of King Thaksin on horseback.

The area is easily accessible using the BTS SkyTrain, which made it really easy to access. There are no particular things to see in this area, but for those seeking the view of the real lifestyle of Thai people, this is definitely worth a visit.

You'll find a lot of stores as well as restaurants and food stalls, which make it a great place to have lunch or dinner.

Thing is that you'll probably be the only foreigner there (it is quite crowded, but did see 2 foreigners for my hour of visiting there), and you'll be able to experience that welcoming and legendary smile that Thailand is famous about.

Just make sure, you know a bit of Thai so you can order food or buy stuff.
