About
MOCA BANGKOK has been purposely built to showcase and exhibit the exceptional works of art collected over the past three decades by Boonchai Bencharongkul, whose passion for art runs deep. The museum is also intended as a tangible sign ofappreciation for the many great favours bestowed upon the Thai people by our beloved monarch, King Rama IX, and is dedicated to the honour of Professor Silpa Bhirasri, the “Father of Contemporary Art” in Thailand. MOCA BANGKOK displays works of art inspired by traditional Thai modes of expression alongside art that has been influenced by the introduction of Western artistic styles and techniques. Some 800 works selected from Boonchai Bencharongkul’s private collection are exhibited in the 20,000 square metres of well – lit white space. These artworks stand as a statement of Thai creativity, beliefs, and thought processes. They also place for the first time on permanent display, a large quantity of what can be considered the best works of Thai art-a te

- Simon TFrance35 contributionsWell worth a visitIt may not be the easiest place to get to but it REALLY is worth it. The building is light and airy - an architectural triumph. The works are exhibited well and there are interesting explanations printed in both Thai and good English. I appreciated the variety that was on display. The small garden is a delight. After browsing through the collections, I visited the very reasonably priced café/restaurant on the ground floor and had a delicious light meal.Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten 6 October 2023

Some surrealism but not much abstract, I took the BTS to Mo Chit and then a Grab (Thai Uber) to the museum. Take the walkway toward the park and wait near a bus stop and you will be on the correct direction of the street.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 24 April 2024

A private institution, MOCA Bangkok does well to introduce first timers to the incredible depth in early Thai contemporary artists.
The museum could revamp the merchandise of their gift shop. The cafe is lovely and offers outdoor seating.
One word of advice is to reach MOCA at 10am when it opens. By 12pm it is swarming with bloggers and influencers with their camera gear and it mars the experience of viewing art at your leisure.

Good modern art venue. Child friendly. As in any modern art museum, expect many questions.
Museum also hosted an installation related to preserving seeds and how to grow native plants, which was very informative for children.

The collection in this museum is amazing. If you are a fan of surrealist, this place will inspire you.
Very impressive. Especially for thailand. Never would have happened without Boonchai Bencharongkul, the founder of DTac. Government would not help. No vision. He stepped up. Mostly his personal collection. Most notable is the work of the surrealist master Prateep Kochabua. Two large rooms devoted to his work. The highlight for me. Though there were many other great paintings and sculptures. It opened my eyes to the level of talent hidden in Thailand.

This museum is definitely hard to get to from the centre of the city. Two different taxi's denied us when we showed them where we wanted to go. It was about a half hour drive and we had to go through tolls which costed us about 50BHT. Despite all that, I'm really glad we went. The art was so cool and unique to Thailand. I love how they have such an emphasis on Thai and Asian art in general. It was such a well spent afternoon looking at all the beautiful things. Plus it was a great break from the heat. Plenty of people asked me about this when i returned because I guess its not super popular amongst tourists. Of all the places we visited in Bangkok, this was by far the most empty. There were no crowds or loud noises at all, and while I love Bangkok for the hustle and bustle, this was a most welcome little break from all of that. We were lucky to be there for the Banksy exhibit which was actually really cool. I enjoyed it a lot and there were tons of pieces by him there. I had apprehensions when leaving because I was scared it would be hard to find a taxi but the people at the front desk called one for us and made sure they used the meter so we werent ripped off. All in all, it was really cool and provided us with some peace and calm on our crazy trip in Bangkok

As we know, a museum of contemporary art is never easy to understand, even more so if that art describes a culture that is foreign to us both in terms of values and aesthetic standards, yet I highly recommend a visit to MOCA. You can get there easily by subway, access costs around 240 baht, allow at least a couple of hours because the exhibition is spread over 6 floors and is a treasure chest of beauties.
Contrary to what I thought, there are both objects from the past that introduce the evolution of Asian art, and foreign works (concentrated on the top floor).
The works are beautiful, evocative and of great impact. The building that hosts them is rigorously clean and welcomes you with a beautiful infinity pool with an immense white sculpture.
Also highly recommended to break the frenzy and noise of the city

I try to visit art galleries and museums in every country I visit, so this was no exception. I was blown away with the art the minute you walk through the front entrance. Most of the work will have you staring at it for longer than a glance. The second floor has a great collection of traditional ramayana masks and shadow puppets. I thought it was a nice touch that even the benches in the galleries were all works of art as well. Overall, the works are all very impressive that I know have at least 3 thai artists on my favourites list. I wish I had more time to view each piece of work but I had to rush. You can easily view everything within 2 hours though.
the only con was that the gallery shop could use a little more products. Most galleries I visit will have a wide collection of art cards or postcards of the works on show. A way for people to take home a work of art on a budget, the shop had very little selection.

I had a disappointing experience at the museum today. After my visit, I had already booked a taxi through an app, and when it arrived, I was informed that my booking was canceled—not by the driver, but by the museum’s security guard. It turned out that the guard asked the driver to cancel my order so two other female visitors could take the taxi instead. This caused us to wait an additional 20 minutes in front of the museum for another ride.
This was frustrating and unfair, so be aware that such behavior could happen. It’s something the museum should consider addressing to ensure a smoother experience for all visitors.

Stunning architecture and a great collection of artwork make MOCA a must see for anyone interested in Thailand’s art and culture.
There are 5 floors, each with a distinctive exhibit that showcases a wide range of Thai artistic style.
Great little gift shop and cafe as well.
It’s a little out of the way so be prepared for a pretty steep cab fare.

How do people usually go to moca? Taxi or bus or anything else? Thank you for your help
Written 17 July 2019
Can anyone tell me if there are other interesting sites within 20 minutes walking of Moca? I've already been to Chatuchak Market. It's quite far from my hotel and want to make it worth the time 😁. I'm in Bangkok now and returning Jan 27th which is when I'd visit.

Наталия, не помню точно, но недорого. Можно в интернете посмотреть. Ну вот: MOCA – Museum of Contemporary Art (499 Kamphaengpet 6th Road | Lad Yao, Chatuchak) открылся 18 апреля 2012 года.

Is there a luggage storage room? I'll be on my way to DMK airport and was planning to stop by the museum If there is, how much does it cost to use?
Written 28 January 2018
My guess is yes, because (1) they have a storage space for bags and (20 since they don't allow you to bring any bags into the museum (not even water).
