Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place from the past should have been an empty square before.
And when there are activities, come to this place But this time I saw a lot like temple. Which in truth is a place that is made for Commemorating the King Rama IX, where Thai people come and take pictures I can only stand and watch the beautiful night lights and see the work of Rama IX. That is made to Thai people I am not surprised that Thai people will love you because you have done a lot for Thai people. I respect.

On the way to the Grand Palace Complex, I walked past Sanam Luang.

After having been used last year as the site of the late Thai King’s cremation, the Sanam Luang was bare during my visit to Bangkok. The Royal Crematorium, Pavilions, and all the adornments that were constructed on the site had already been torn down.

Sanam Luang is also known as Royal Field.

I was there in April 2013. I was walking on my way to Kao San Road from Grand Palace. I entered into the park area and a local guy with a fat lady came to me and brought me 2 packages of dried corn. He asked me to feed the pigeons. Of course, he did not tell me that I must pay for it. Once I finished feeding the birds, then this guy and the fat lady were surrounded me to force me to pay for 300B. I was scared and wanted to report to police but they did not let me go. As such, I had no choice but negotiated to pay 100B to get rid of the troubles.

I learnt a lesson in this trip to Bangkok that the tourist area in Bangkok is too notorious. I was totally out of guard because my few recent trips in Dubai and Gold Coast in Australia were too perfect in tourism.

Please be extra careful and do not accept anything before you are either confirmed that it is free or a price that you are willing to pay. It is not wise to argue with local where you don't speak Thai.

I post the photo as I took after the incident. Please check it out if you encounter the same problem.

Sanam Luang is a gigantic empty public square used for political rallies and such. Not really worth visiting, but it's useful to know where it is (moreless halfway between Grand Palace and Khaosan Road), because taxi drivers know the place and it is destination of some bus lines, so it may be useful.

Normally it is scorched with sun (not so many trees), wouldn't recommend.

Watch out for multiple scam schemes. One of most popular is "feed the pigeons". A really pleasant lady will give you corn to feed the pigeons and then force you to pay for it huge amounts of money. She will shout for help of some local men. Don't fall for it.

Normally, it's just big plain area build for special event like royal family member's funeral. nothing to do much but it's surrounded by other attraction places. ie, Royal castle, emeral Buddha, musuem, Wat Pho and etc. if you go to those places you can walk around.
In some period, you can enjoy fair market.

One of the best magnificent place you should ever see by yourself is the royal creamatorium of late king rama9 at Sanam luang. Inside you will see exhibition about every thing related to royal funeral. It's good to visit before end of this December 2017.

Conveniently near the Grand Palace and parking space allotted for vans/buses. If you're traveling in groups or you belong with a group of touris, you can set this as a meeting place particularly the benches near surrounded by pigeons.

Tip: don't take corn/feeds from bystanders in the park saying, you can feed the pigeons for free. They'll charge you for 150 Baht or more. Rip-off. Scam. If you want to take photos in the park, just don't mind them.

Not too much shade for sitting and relaxing. The Royal Field is close to the Grand Palace and to Khao San Road. So you can take a break from too many sight-seeings in between.
What you must be careful about are the scammers (as stated in the other reviews). There are guys (we were stopped by just one but we were just coming from there) who will start telling you that the Grand Palace is closed due to various reasons, just pick one, and will start to persuade you to go where he will bring you for a "very small money" (other attractions or "a very cheap gold shop". Just don't fall for it, kindly decline and go away.
In May, Sanam Luang is the ceremonial ground for The Royal Ploughing Ceremony which marks the beginning of the new planting season. It's when the royal oxen are brought out to plough the field, and to provide an omen for the coming plantation.
You can feed the pigeons or to have your fortune told by a fortune-teller but keep in mind that it could be a scam too - you might be forced (if you give up) to pay something for nothing.
The area was also used for royal cremations until the reign of King Rama III, when the king decreed that all cremations be held outside the old city.

Sanam Luang is a site for the cremation of Kings and queens for Chakri Dynasty since Rama I. Annual royal ploughing ceremony will be organised at this square. Previously Sanam Luang is center of the city. But now it is the spot for the tourist buses and public buses to stop for the tourists to visit Grand Palace.

Sanam Luang is 10 minutes walking distance from Khao San Road. If you are walking on the street, beware of the scacmmers that approach you and tell you that Grand Palace is closed for public. For your information, Grand Palace is open DAILY (include weekends and Public Holiday). The only day it close is when Royal Families have some events in the Grand Palace area.

Do not believe the scammers' words that Grand Palace is closed!
