Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It is a public monument in the city center of Bangkok, Actually it is a traffic roundabout on Ratchadamnoen Avenue. This huge landmark chronicles part of Thailand's modern history. This place is not far from Khosan road.

This monument is in honour of the 1932 Siamese coup d'état that replaced the absolute monarchy with a constitutional monarchy. The structure consists of a central column holding the symbolic Thai Constitution of 1932, surrounded by four wing shaped columns to represent the branches of the Thai armed forces as defenders of the constitution. The main disappointing aspect of the monument is that it sits on a roundabout, making it difficult to get up close.

Its exciting as the people are so passionate about their cause. I am not afraid to visit these events as they seemed to be well organized and controlled but i do understand why others may feel concerned.

If you are thinking of wandering around in areas nearby Khaosan Road, then don't miss to visit this place at night. It is also very close to Giant Swing, Both of these sights may seem very interested to people fond of night photography. It will take just few minutes from Khaosan Road.

It’s a large monument in the center of a round about. It gets lit up at night so after dark is a great time to walk past it as well.

The monument shows four giant wings representing Thailand's armed forces: air, land, navy and police protecting a book (the constitution) carried by two offering bowls. It reflects the vision of Phibun, the military ruler at the time it was made in 1939. Note that on the reliefs at the base of the structure no depiction of Thailand's monarchs are to be seen, but mainly soldiers protecting ordinary people.

The monument was named democracy monument, because the military in 1930s Thailand saw themselves as acting on behalf of the people which in their view meant democracy. On an ideological and cultural level they were influenced by Europe (Republican France in particular). Ratchadamnoen avenue was built to resemble Champs Elysées in Paris, thus all the trees providing shade along the original smaller street were cut and buildings that stood in the way were demolished. The inhabitants (many of them Chinese shopkeepers) were given two months notice.

The Democracy Monument is a popular city landmark located along Ratchadamnern Klang Road in the historic Phra Nakhon District of Rattanakosin Island. If you are heading to the Grand Palace, you will surely pass by this monument along the way. This monument is a silent witness to the madness of Bangkok's traffic.

We'd booked a hotel near the Democracy Monument. Ooops. The protests were supposedly violent - my government issued a travel warning and all the western media were using words like 'riot' and 'chaos'. It took a long time (and 4x the fare) to convince any cab driver to take us.
So different to what we witnessed! More like a peaceful demonstration with music, speakers, passion and commitment.
We returned a few days later and walked through the demonstration area and were met with smiles, thumbs up and nothing but good feeling.
The monument itself is nothing to write home about - but the area around it is wonderful to explore.
