The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Thong Lor & Ekamai
Known as Bangkok’s hippest neighbourhood, Thong Lor and Ekamai is where the city's well-dressed and well-heeled spend their nights sipping cocktails in hidden speakeasies and posh restaurants. Live it up in one of Thong Lor's extravagant clubs and be prepared to brush shoulders with a Thai celebrity or two. While great for a night out, the area is nothing short of interesting during the daytime, either. Expect a mix of savvy coffee shops, pop-up bars and loads of vintage stores, brought to you by hip locals with eyes for design.

Was here about five years ago. There used to be dozens of street food venues on this street. New condo development pushed them out. Now there are about seven under cover. Don’t bother with this market. There are more food vendors on places like Soi 11.

A nice manageable size food market. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but if you're staying on this side of town it makes a good introduction to the locally available foods.

Everything we had was high quality and the atmosphere was pleasant and welcoming.

To the travellers, I'm a local and I live around there. The famous food stall night market of Sukhumvit38 was already gone due to construction of a new residential condominium, the vast majority of the street food vendors has moved elsewhere or stopped selling. The remaining handful mostly targets foreigners (as you can see English signboards, local won't need it anyway). You can not really call this area street food night market anymore. I'm sorry to say this but I feel so sad as I grew up with lots of memories on the food in this night market...Boo to the condominium construction (-__-), Anyway, you can still find load of local food and local famous mango sticky rice on the opposite side of the street (soi Thonglor or Sukhumvit 55).

I've lived in Bangkok for almost 10 years, so I know about Thai food, and I can tell good Thai street food from a hole in the ground. I've always wondered if these Soi 38 places are any good. They do get crowded, especially with foreigners. You'll also see many Thais- from out of town. Thais who know better do not eat at these places. Why? Because the food's really expensive for street food, the portions are small, and most importantly, the food SUCKS. Several of these places specialize in bait-and-switch menus. They have large glossy menus showing large portions of mouth watering food and they actually deliver what looks like a two-thirds empty bowl of scraps to your table! And the people who work here are just plain old rude (using Thai standards). For good Thai street food, try- just across the Pinklao bridge in Thonburi, south side of the street, behind the bus stops (west bound bus number 511 will take you directly there in about an hour from Soi 38) or Sukhumvit soi 28 before 1pm, or the street stalls in front of and around Sriraj Hospital (amazing places over there; easy to get to from the river, and walk through the hospital grounds to the front, need to go before 1pm), or Ramkhamhaeng soi 24 just outside the wall of Ramkhamhaeng University (student street food is the best street food) or almost anywhere but Khao San Road and here. Even the early am places across the street under the Thonglor BTS (early morning jok- yum) are better. People rave about this because they don't know any better. It is easy access for tourists, and oh my gosh, it's three whole bts stops from Nana, so it's the back of beyond for most tourists. Save your time and your money. Wonders are waiting for you if you're ready to invest a bot more time and energy.

This is a street, a collection of food stalls, rather than a single restaurant. We found this on our first night and had to come back again - it's a feast of all different kinds of thai dishes, cooked right there in front of you and costing hardly anything at all (50 baht a dish?).

Go to Thong Lo station on the Sky Train (or get a taxi there) and you'll see the road from the street/sky train exit.

(Try the thai yellow curries half way down the street on the left hand side, or the mango sticky rice a bit nearer to the BTS Skytrain station. Or just point and try anything you see - like the sugared veg and nuts in coconut milky soup!)

Sukhumvit 38 is actually a place rather then an actual restaurant. It's a collection of around 20 street stalls and very casual 'restaurants'. Some of them have seating, both indoor and outdoor. It's one of the best places to go to for street food in the Sukhumvit area. I highly recommend it if your adventurous and want to try authentic Thai food - what the locals eat not the rubbish restaurants geared towards tourists. I've been to places like Vertigo, Celadon and other up-market restaurants in Bangkok and they are second rate compared to places like Sukhumvit 38 and Soi Texas (another street food market in Chinatown). The food is exceptional, prices are really cheap (typically 40-50 baht per dish, equivalent to £1), the atmosphere is fantastic and for street food, it's very hygienic. The stalls open in the evenings and don't close until 2am. I recommend you try the pork satay stall, the mango sticky rice dessert stall and one of the restaurants that specialise in pad thai or soup noodles. This place is really easy to get to. It's literally metres away from the Thong Lo BTS/Skytrain station in Central Bangkok.

***THIS PLACE IS NOW CLOSED***

All the people saying "big disappointment", "tourist trap" etc. should be aware that 90% of the buildings that used to house the street venders have now been demolished to make way for a condo. Only a fraction of stalls remain. The best of which have moved on.

Soi 38 really was the heart and soul of fantastic street food in Thonglor, the buzz was second to none, the quality was excellent. Sadly this place no longer exists and should be removed from trip advisor to avoid people making the trip needlessly.

Read so much about it and spent time looking for Sukhumvit Soi 38(a place well known for street food)to only find out that many of the hawkers have shifted out of the place. Only a handful of them left and nothing very much to shout about😔.

I wrote this review to share with all NOT to waste your previous time in Bangkok looking for it. Time should better spent in this exciting capital!

Sukhumvit Soi 38 answers the questions that many westerners have wanting to try Bangkok street food: which cart to choose, is the hygiene ok? All bangkok street stalls are subject to hygiene inspections anyway and like any other food businesses there rely on return custom so it is in their best interests to serve hygienic food. I think you are far more likely to get food poisoning from a western fried chicken restaurant staffed by uninterested schoolkids So putting aside cleanliness, which is really a non issue, where to go for Bangkok street food? Sukhumvit Soi 38 is the best place for many reasons. Soi 38 is really easy to get to. It is immediately beside the Thong Lo BTS Skytrain station (exit 4). The quality of the food is fantastic. You can get all the street food dishes you would expect. This is a very busy street food location so turnover is brisk and there is a great variety of dishes you can chose from. There are three or four street food restaurants on the soi, but most of the venders are street stalls. There are about 20 stalls. There are tables all along the soi and in the sub-soi to the right as you enter soi 38, but here is the first clever thing: its like a food court in a western mall in that you can sit anywhere. Plonk yourself down at a table and then order from any one or more of the various stalls. The second clever thing is that you don't pay when you order. Rather when you order your dish you are asked where you are sitting (most of the venders have some English). You point out where you are sitting and then when your dish is cooked to order someone will bring it over to your table! Then you pay. Most dishes are about 40 to 50 baht. Because soi 38 is a relatively large collection of stalls you can pick a full meal for a group of people by ordering dishes from 5 of 6 stalls, including desserts. In particular there is one fantastic desert stall. I have included a photo. Just ask for a bit of everything. You will get a dish with a variety of jellied things, a splodge of condensed milk and a ball of shaved ice. It's REALLY good. Also you must try the pad thai from the award winning pad thai stall (yes street stalls get awards) I have also attached a photo. The good pad thai stall is at the start of the sub-soi to the right as soon as you enter soi 38 from Sukhumvit road. The other thing about soi 38 is that it is really easy to get to. It is immediately beside the Thong Lo BTS Skytrain station (exit 4). There are stalls selling various fruit drinks (get a passionfruit drink), but also, because there are a couple of restaurants you can also get a cold beer if you want. It is a haunt for hipster Thais, but as it is becoming more well known more and more tourists can be seen in soi 38. The last time I was there there was a Japanese film crew there filming.
